MLB.tv. Watch every game on your PC and you can even choose which broadcast to watch. Stream through your PS3 as well, if you have one. I am a baseball nut and thought I'd die without HD Extra Innings...I don't miss it one bit with MLB.tv.

But if you want to watch a team that is frequently playing in what's considered "in market", you'd be blacked out online.

We switched to basic cable (~13$) and economy internet (1.5 down, 25$) a couple months ago. We pretty much get local stations (in HD) and a number of public access stations... I think we also got fox news, I should rescan to see if cnn is available.

Anyways, we don't miss cable. We watch what we want to watch. Only thing that sucks is that there are a few shows we'd like to catch but no longer can't. So far, the pros outweigh the negatives.
We have a little dell zino hooked up to the tv (w/ a usb tv tuner in case we want to record anything), a netflix subscription (9$ a month - but i wish they streamed more), hulu, amazon video on demand, and several other media center plugins to get other video website like youtube, dailymotion, etc. It would be great if vbs.tv had a plugin.

Actual basic cable (the <$20 kind that is mainly used for reception, not extra channels) is in HD, at least for me. The few extra channels that you can't get OTA (CNN, TBS, and some local ones) aren't in HD, but the major stations are.

How do you have HD with basic cable? Do you have a cable box of some sort? Are you saying that you have OTA tv for the HD channels along with an antenna and the rest are analog from the cable company?

Also, where I am from the Basic cable (>20 channels) I believe was referred to by Time Warner as Lifeline basic, and Basic cable has all of the typical cable channels such as Comedy Central. Both of these were/are available over the standard analog cable without a cable box.

Sounds like the basic channels (NBC, Fox, CBS....) are transmitted in HD, unencrypted. No box needed.

Yes, that.

For a while I had basic cable plus a sports package that gave me NFL Network, NFL Red Zone, and a few other sports channels. That one required a cable box and all of the channels were in SD, even the local broadcast stations. But I could unhook the cable box and watch broadcast stations by plugging the TV directly into the wall; it's just the TV's tuner couldn't get anything other than the basic stations.

I want to get rid of cable TV all together and only have internet and netflix streaming. I can use OTA for the locale channels in HD. The issue right now is I only have 1 indoor antenna and two TV's. Also we are planning to sell our house (good luck in this economy!) and she does not want me running cat 5 to a TV or BD player with streaming access. So I might wait. Plus I would get a new TV with internet capabilities which are undoubtedly still in their infancy and will get better with each iteration. Vizio already has Wireless N and wired on their sets.

Football season sucks with basic cable.
It seems random whether or not they air ESPN games on ABC.
It all depends on the market and the ratings of the game.

You get most major games on NBC, CBS and FOX, but not having ESPN sucks.

I have had basic cable for 3 years now. I am always tempted to upgrade to Standard, just for Discovery and ESPN, but I haven't yet.

spend $40 on Playon or Tversity and stream Discovery and/or ESPN, look on their sites for exactly what premium content the apps stream.

hmm.. ill look into that.

Also, the major networks are all broadcast in HD. I think there was an FCC requirement that all cable networks provide the major networks in HD. Comcast told me that I didn't get them, but you just have to re-wire your setup with a splitter to get them directly without going through the cable box.

Pretty much just the locals + tbs, discovery, and one or two other channels.

I'm hoping that the Penn State games being shown on ESPN are also shown locally on ABC. If not, i'll just swing down the street to a bar and watch them.

I should be good for steelers games. The only thing i'm really gonna miss out on are Penguins games. I'll have to find a way to watch them online.

I looked, yea ESPN is part of our expanded basic tier. I hadn't thought of it before. Usually ESPN exclusives are just on ESPN though, sometimes they do air ESPN on ABC, but it's not for all their games.

Anyone have any luck with Time Warner retentions? My top tier internet and cable is $130/mo, up from $89. I want to call and threated to go to DirectTv if they do not put me back on a new subscriber plan.

We haven't had cable or satellite for over a year and we don't miss it much. We do pay $10/month for Netflix which I stream thru the PS3 and it works out fantastic. For sports we go over to the in-laws to watch Sunday football and the occasional college games.

I've been on basic cable (which is now a minimum 70 or so channels) since well.. ever. Tv is a crock and it's only there so people that come over and can't work my HTPC can watch their bullshit generic nonsense. If they're amused that easily they don't usually come over again though

The only reason I even keep cable is for 49er games. Once I find a reliable place to record that (don't watch live TV), I am done with cable.

I've seriously been considering canceling my cable service altogether and going all netflix and OTA. Damn basic cable is $60 a month in my town.

I was going to go OTA, but I can't get any OTA HD channels where I live. They are broadcast from like 40 miles away...

It really sucks.. comcast is literally the ONLY way I can get TV. I can't get dish of any kind because my neighborhood is filled with massive oak trees that block the entire sky line pretty much 360 degrees around my house.

Someone asked about ESPN football games on ABC. For Thursday and Friday night games, you probably won't get it on ABC. For Saturday games, there is a pool and ratings/geographic location determines which game you get on your local ABC affiliate. There are usually three or four games that ESPN picks up and one will air on ABC, one on ESPN, one on ESPN2, one on ESPNU, and another that airs on ESPN alternate if you get it or doesn't air in your area. This is college football.

For NFL, you won't get any MNF games on ABC unless the game is your local team.

Until they figure out a way to get sports online, even if its NFL Sunday Ticket online only at $$$ every year, I don't think I could drop my cable. At least CFB has ESPN3.com, which your ISP might offer.

that's what I just did except it was satellite. plan on picking up a couple of converter boxes for the older sets, but until i do, dvd/vcr will have to do.

Even if the team is local, you won't get MNF, they only do it on ESPN. At least they don't show Patriot or Giants games here on those conditions.

where during the course of the season, you'll have bought enough beer and chicken wings to equal the amount your "saved" by cutting the services anyway.

Actually its part of the NFL TV contracts so either your station is messing up or you are too far out to be considered part of that market. I know for a fact the last two times that the Bills have been on MNF it has been aired on our local ABC affiliate, WKBW.

Damn directv and their nfl monopoly, and damn time warner for not carrying espn3.
