I called Time-Warner and gave them my spiel: I'm a long term-customer, I hate to change but Dish Network is a better value, blah, blah.

The response was to try to sell me more stuff - digital cable, sports pacakge, etc.

I kindly reminded the rep that I was calling to pay less, not more.

After 20 minutes of banter, I reitierated the bottom line. Give your best price or I walk.

Got the price down from $49.99/month to $29.99 for 6 months then $38.99 after that.

It's still too much but overall, mission accomplished.

Congratulations! for you... But make certain that your service doesn't change over the next few months.

thats awesome! you can do that with cell phone companies too now once your contract is over- my contract expired 2 months ago so i'm just going month-by-month, been with my company for 3.5 years and i just called them and was like your service sucks, i'm very unhappy about the customer service and the reception, i'm switching to verizon. they gave me 100 free anytime minutes a month for as long as i stay a customer, and if i had re-signed my contract (Whcih i'm not stupid enough to do) they would give me additional benefits like nights and wekeend at 7pm instead of 9, plus additional minutes etc.

That is very good, actually My cable company dropped the ball by waiting until our new street had almost everybody moved in before laying the cable for service. As a result almost everyone on the street was forced to get dish network. Now we get offers int he mail for cable, except we're all locked in for at least 12 months (even if we wanted to change). Silly charter cable.

just got a letter from comcast that they are upping the expanded basic from $39ish to $42ish starting next month! I used to be able to call and bitch at them, and they would give me 10$ off for the next 3 months, time to call them again!

I can't find the service on their website. Geez.

It's basically 70 or so channels with no movie channels.

Not bad. I was able to talk my cable company down to under $60/month for a 2 room digital setup and cable modem access. Was originally $89.99 and included three movie channels, but I cancelled the movie channels saving myself over $30/month.

Why do so many keep cable with their outrageous prices? DirecTV for me... $45 a month with 2 rooms and it's well over 100 channels, plus a bunch of music channels which are actually pretty good, not to mention $5 a month for tivo instead of $13 I would have to pay with standalone tivo and cable. And it's better picture quality to boot.

Me thinnks that comcast is rasing the prices on expanded basic cable to get more people to switch over to digital cable. And I bet comcast will continue to raise rates. Ever since comcast took over here, they have been raising rates and not raising service satisfaction (with the exception of cable modem).

Last time I called to try and get them to lower there rates they said that promotions are only for new customers blah blah blah...what do I have to say to these people to get them to lower rates?

Maybe I'll justy switch over to basic cable at $8 per month plus the 42.95 for the cable modem, and then get satalite. Even just getting the basic cable plus modem is cheaper than being a non-tv subscriber to the cable modem service ($60??are they nuts?)

"Forced?" God forbid anyone should open a book or go for a walk until cable gets installed!

I need to call up my cable company and see if I can do the same. Been with them for ten years for TV service and 2.5 for broadband. They're running a killer deal for new broadband subscribers. $26.95 a month for 12 months instead of $39.99. Maybe they'll be cool and hook me up with the deal, or maybe not but it can't hurt to try.

just called comcrap, and got shot down as I don't really have any bargaining power, since my local phone company is still a privately own small independent company, and they charge $43.95 for their DSL service, and I am only paying $42.95 thur comcast. they did offer me a basic + silver digital package for $23ish, but I will lose all the expanded basic channels, so its useless to me. I hate monopoly.
