Ebay is already selling Steam accounts. In other words when people have finished the game they are selling their accounts to get some of their money back. I think this way it's really preventing Valve from selling a version. It's also more easy to sell an account than to sell a hardcopy and then ship it. No wonder VU is po'd.

Just a question of what's better for everyone and this economy in general I guess. What's better: programmers getting all the money for their own product and not sharing the profits with others, or publishers making lots of money off the work of others.

Life goes on. Things change, and certain aspects of the traditional ways of business are fazed out.

I just want to make sure of something though, can you format your computer, re-install steam, log into your account and re-download HL2 and play it.

Also, what are the chances that the seller just all of a sudden feels like playing again and kicks you off when you're playing online. You just got screwed over at least partially.

Or, sell the account, change the password, screw the buyer and keep playing.

How is this any different than someone purchasing the CD, and then selling it once they are done?

I'd be willing to bet that these accounts on ebay are yet to be paid for, people use stolen credit card numbers to purchase the accounts after the auction closes. I have seen a few threads on the steampowered forums from people who have fallen victim to this.

It's against the EULA to sell a Steam account. Accounts sold on ebay will be banned. At least that's what Valve has said over on steampowered.com

People are always trying to push the envelope! curses to them!
Oh yeah, and if HL2 has the same draw as HL1, people wont be selling their steam accounts too much. The mods that will be released are probably going to be phenominal.

selling accounts a ton more dangerous than selling physical items though. Not only will you get no help from Valve but one can easily send the password but get no money or give money and get no password. Even better, sites like Ebay and probably credit card companies offer zero protection for non-physical items. I was *lucky* selling my FFXI account successfully

They're transferring ownership of a license from one person to another. I don't really see the problem...although there probably is something in the EULA that makes this illegal...

I often sell games on eBay after I'm done with them. I don't see what's wrong with that. I paid for it, I don't want it anymore, it's mine to do what I want with.

Just because HL2 requires an account to play it with, I don't see how the situation is any different here. I paid for the game, and when I'm done with it, if I can't see myself wanting to play it again, then I feel I have a right to sell it to someone else so they can play it.
