Just upgraded to Windows 8. Any tips for making the most of it?

When Windows 8 first came out and everyone started complaining about it and I thought to myself how bad can it be? It's just a start screen instead of menu. Plus, some people love it.

Well I got Windows 8 a few days ago and it's been a much rougher adjustment than I predicted. I'm slowly getting the hang of but there are just a few things that are plain inconvenient. For example, it probably took me a whole day to figure out how to restart my computer.

So my question for those who stuck through it and got used to it, what tips do you have for me?

I installed Start8. Now it is like any other Windows except with the speed tweaks/latest/etc.

I remember the first 5 minutes after installing it I was a little frustrated. Like how I couldn't figure out how to open regular IE and not metro-IE. After a while I got used to it, but still prefer the regular start menu.

Get a Start Menu Application:

You may not even need one of these, that is if you take a liking to the new changes. But, if you don't like the new changes, you may want to consider a Third-Party Start Menu application.

Windows 8 got rid of the old start menu function, so this is why I am listing the following as my recommendations.

I recommend any of these:

IObit Start Menu 8 (Freeware) - http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php

Classic Shell (Freeware) - http://classicshell.net/

StartIsBack (2 PC License $3, 5 PC License $5) - http://startisback.com/

Stardock Start8 ($4.99 per PC License) - http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

Disable Animations:

Step 1: Hit Windows Key and "R" on your keyboard (This will bring up your run function)

Step 2: In the Run window, type "sysdm.cpl" (This will bring up your System Properties Window)

Step 3: In the System Properties window, click on the "Advanced" tab, under the Performance category, click on "Settings..." (This will bring up your Performance Options Window)

Step 4:

Disable/Uncheck the following:

Animate controls and elements inside windows
Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
Animations in the taskbar
Enable Peek
Fade or slide menus into view
Fade or slide Tooltips into view
Fade out menu items after clicking
Save taskbar thumbnail previews
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show shadows under windows
Show translucent selection rectangle
Show window contents while dragging
Slide open combo boxes
Smooth-scroll list boxes

Leave these Enabled/Checked:

Show thumbnails instead of icons
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

Step 5: Click the Apply button, then the OK button to apply the above changes

Doing the above will help reduce lag when opening Windows and Programs, Especially when using an older to Mid-End computer...Newer/High-End computers, not so much.

One tip that a lot of new users don't know about is move your mouse cursor to bottom left corner then right click and you get the Win+X menu looks like this (works on Metro start too).

On mine you see I added Restart,Shutdown etc from this link http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.30 .

Personally I just use Win8 as it is with the improved Win+X menu, obviously you can add shortcuts to desktop/taskbar for programs you need like you do on XP,Vista Win7 etc...

I also use OblyTile(nice free program) for Metro tiles http://lifehacker.com/5986435/oblytile-creates-fully+customized-windows-8-tiles

Learn to use keyboard shortcuts. I don't' have a single item in my taskbar or desktop.

Want to open a app, press the windows key and start typing it's name. Want to browse for files, win-E, want to access shell or control panel, win-x, want to get PC info, personalization, etc then use win-i. Do you want to shutdown/restart/etc, win-d (minimize all apps) followed by alt-F4 (or just alt-F4 if already on desktop).

Do any of the start menu programs have the Show Desktop rectangle on right edge of the taskbar? Startisback does not appear to.

Pin as much as you use on Start. My display is 1080 wide and Start is roughly three screen widths on my PC (there's a big chunk of games on the right edge of the wall). The Windows Vista Start Menu was a huge improvement over the Classic Start Menu but it's one weakness was mouse usability, compared to both Classic and Windows 8, I feel. The infinite width of Start on Windows 8 rectifies the cramped nature of the Vista-era Start Menu and makes it much easier to access stuff in mouse-only mode.

Do any of the start menu programs have the Show Desktop rectangle on right edge of the taskbar? Startisback does not appear to.
Do you want the functionality or the appearance? Stock Windows 8 has the button, it's just themed as invisible until hovered over.

How easy is it to uninstall these start menu programs? I'm scared to trust programs that modify the UI.

I'd say that as soon as you realize that the new start screen is really no different than the start menu of old, only full screen now, you'll be good to go. Plus, don't listen to a bunch of crybabies on the internet.
