Yeah, I'm unsure of this one. I hear decent things, but I've watched so many war documentaries and I'm not sure I can handle another one, plus I saw Armadillo earlier this year and thought it did a great job showing what, apparently, Restrepo also tries to show.

It was ok. The film itself didn't do justice to the subject matter. I kinda lost interest at points because it was so slow.

I just watched Restrepo and I can only think one thing afterwards. It's not what everyone told me I would think, that we need to get our guys out of there, but that we should have just napalmed the entire fucking valley and kept doing so to leave it ablaze for a goddamn month. Light the entire fucking valley, fuck those assfucks. Seriously, we are such gigantic pussies now we would rather risk our soldiers lives than be efficient. No wonder our military costs so fucking much.

You're correct, in Vietnam we simply cleared entire areas of the planet with B-52 drops. Granted, the main focus of those drops was the military use of the Ho Chi Minh trail and others, but I'm certain we knew that women and children were helping transport equipment on the route and we just didn't give a fuck.

Or we could just blow it all up or set it ablaze. I think setting the entire shit ablaze would be better. Isolate it, surround it, then set it ablaze. No one escapes. I'm by no means a war monger and think we should avoid war at all costs, but if we as a nation think we should go to war we need to take the goddamn kid gloves off.

That's a good way to win a battle but not a war.

and that strategy clearly lead to victory!

well, tactics like that would certianly clear up one of the more confounding aspects of this war: Who is the enemy and who is a civilian?

set a valley on fire--we'll be damn sure after that anyone not in a military uniform is the enemy.

Watched it on NatGeo, and bought the BluRay. It was done by the same guy who wrote the Perfect Storm. Very little, if any, politics in the film. Highly recommended.

Finished it this morning. It was simply powerful for me, it conveyed much of the fear.

I saw this on the National Geographic channel last month. I thought it was interesting and offered some perspective on what is happening over there.

Another poster complained that it was viewing the war "through a straw." Sometimes that's a good way to offer a raw, unfiltered perspective on the events. The director did a nice job conveying the experiences of the soldiers without making the documentary political. I'd like to see more unbiased material like this.

watched this yesterday after recommendations from this thread ... i REALLY REALLY enjoyed it. was very sad when their buddy died in that firefight, and the reaction of the other marines.

anyone know of any movies that are similar to this?

Check out the documentary I linked to above in post # 44. I believe that is the one where they are in a convoy where an IED kills several as well. Very sad and unfiltered, and also shows an unprecedented meeting of tribal elders meeting with the Green Berets to work together against the Taliban. We need more of these documentaries that show the Good, Bad, and Ugly. Unfortunately, humans have not yet evolved to the point where warfare is behind us, yet we get such an inaccurate portrayal of warfare thanks to Hollywood.

As for Restrepo, the filmmakers stated goal was to put the viewer through a 90 minute deployment, without the political aspects. Sabastian Junger is an interesting author and filmmaker.

Yeah, genocide is definitely more cost effective. Who has to win hearts and minds when you can just kill them all?
