just watched Seven Samurai

Great movie. The pacing may be a bit slow, the "special effects" a bit off (lol), but man what an awesome movie.


Even though they don't show you much history on each character, you rooted for the main characters just for their personalities and their actions. it seemed that you really didn't have to know their past to get to knw the character.

Only through their actions and personality is when i got attached to the characters. After the movie ended, i never really questioned each character's past...


this movie had true character development and had all the elements of comedy, drama, action, and some love.


all in all i loved the movie. It's definitely worth the rental, and i'm thinking about nabbing the DVD set

I own the Criterion first edition with the restoration demo and subtitles that can be disabled

Some more good ones:
* Yojimbo, Sanjuro (Yojimbo came first, not the Clint Eastwood movie)
* Chushingura (slow but good -- the story mentioned in Deniro's Ronin)
* Zaotichi series
* Throne of Blood
* Samurai trilogy

All worth a netflix rental.

almost anything by Kurosawa is good, although he directed for so long some of his movies are lackluster compared to his best, such as Seven Samura and Ran

I still remember seeing this movie back in 1964-65 when my eldest brother took us down to the local Japanese movie house here in SF. We also were big Toshiro Mifune fan's when he was in Yojimbo and Sanjuro. My favorite was his Samurai trilogy(Musashi) piece which was magnificent.

Toshiro Mifune was also teamed up with John Belushi in the movie comedy -1941

For a good laugh, go see "Hidden Fortress". Tell me if that reminds you of any other movie... say... one that just got released on DVD?

Not Kurosawa, but you should see Twilight Samurai. You could even get away with taking a girl.

Also not Kurosawa, the new Zatoichi movie blows. Fvcking horrible.

A much better collaboration was with Charles Bronson in Soleil rouge (Red Sun), a Western where Mifune is trying to recover a sword stolen from the Japanese ambassador. Pretty good East-meets-Western with action and a little humor (not slaptsick like Chan & Wilson).

This is really a great movie, ended up renting it when I had the Wal-Mart DVD rental free trial and they had it on there, otherwise I would of never heard about it. People probably think it is a bit slow, but that would be comparing it to todays movies which are often filled with pointless action and violence, with less focus on the actual story. A must see, just make sure you take enough time to watch the whole thing because it is sort of long.
