just when we're all getting acclimated with 1080p, out comes 4k

There will be content eventually. Just don't be a fucking first adopter.

The Viewsonic VP2290b came out what, 10 years ago? And yet, we're still probably 5 years away from affordable 4k monitors.

4k and 8k mmmm nice!! Although, the media will require so much space. I thought I read somewhere a while ago that such high resolution movies would be at least 2TB uncompressed each...

They didn't mind breaking compat with 3D so I guess a 100/200GB BD using HEVC might be in the future but its going to be harder to sell than 3D (we can't even get people to notice 1080P). Even if the studios join the 21st century and offer content online caps would limit who can use it.

It was just a couple of weeks ago I was sitting in my living room watching my pj, and I thought "I really need a 4k projector."

I sit roughly 15ft away from a 100" screen and can make out the pixels. I'd love a higher pixel density display, even if it is just upscaled 1080p content.

Lets get 1080p everywhere uncompressed first.

Yup, then 1080p uncompressed upscaled.
4k displays should come first, then bluray upscaled players and 1080p upscaled broadcasting.
Then 4k compressed content, and hopefully uncompressed.

progressively scaled DVDs look significantly better on a 1080P display compared to on a display running 480p. I imagine progressively scaled Bluray will look quite nice on a 4K display. Of course that will depend a lot on the capabilities of future bluray players.....

Anyhow ... I plan to keep my current 1080p projector for another 9 years, and then upgrade to whatever is the "best bang for the buck" .... at that time ...

It'd be nice even to just have the camera's shooting in 8k raw, digital, so in the future when the consumer finally get the technology, they can re-release in - hopefully - 8k uncompressed format and we can finally enjoy Avatar 2: Bring the Pain B*tch in all its glory....

I can't imagine keeping my projector past it's first bulb burnout. They're coming down in price and upping the tech all the time. By the time my bulb burns out next year, I'd like to think I could get a nice 4k projector for under 1500.

I love my current Projector. (Mitsu HC3800.) I may upgrade sooner, but, my initial plan was to go 10 years between upgrades/replacements. That way, I can spend that $1500 on a vacation instead.

You need a better projector or smoother screen then. Or maybe you have "zoom" vision.

Mutant, perhaps?

uncompressed? has compression ever hurt the quality of blurays? i though whats holding the quality back is the blurry sources and poor transfers, not the compression

I don't want to go out on a limb here, but I think that was the whole point of that post. I'd like a better projector.

Good to clear that up

I would think any of the new 1080p projectors would be sufficient to "clear" up your issue. I myself will be looking into a projector and screen next spring.

Thinking of a screen size of 100-110" and one of the following (depending on professional reviews and price)

Mitsubishi HC 7800 (if it has enough vertical lens shift to shelf mount)
Epson 5010
JVC RS45
Panasonic PT 7000

I would like powered zoom and focus and lens memory for watching the 2.35 stuff.

pron :awe:

So you can see the zits on her ass with photo realism? No thanks.

That said, I could see this being useful if you had an 120+ inch projector screen that covered your entire wall. Now all we need is the content... the non-pron content, thanks

We're getting close to the "retina display" for TV. Still, why would anyone want a 4k projector for the home. What are you ever going to play on it? There's no content.

A 2 pixel by 2 pixel screen is a "retina display" when you're far enough away from it. You would probably have to less than 5 feet away from a 200" screen to resolve 4k x 3k pixels with your eye.
