It's not even necessarily for crimes! It is saying that the public has a right to know if someone's putting money in the pocket of one of the most powerful people in the country, which seems like an awfully reasonable thing to me.
Except this Supreme Court has oddly enough ruled that bribery in basically all shapes and forms is perfectly Constitutionally legal - and it is also perfectly legal to keep the bribery completely anonymous and hidden from the public. (Just don't include in the briefcase of cash you personally hand over a signed note stating that "this is a bribe" or "this is in exchange for your favorable ruling/lawmaking", as that is what is required for it to become illegal...)

Seems like a constitutional crisis in the making. I think that will make Roberts come up with a Ethics Policy Fast. How is the SC going to rule on a matter that affects the Supreme Court? That should destroy whatever credibility it has left.

But who knows, the arguments Conservatives make nowadays seem devoid of law/reason. The argument that Congress who decides how the Supreme Court is constituted can't write ethics rules for it is asinine.
Seems to me any pretext of giving a shit has evaporated. Roberts flipping the Senate off sort of cemented that didnt it?

I think they just have to delay until the Republicans reclaim the Senate in 2024. Then all this nonsense can be properly filed away under 'Failed Witch Hunts'. I don't see Biden going before cameras daily and warning the nation the Republican Party is a Mafia organization bent on the destruction of democracy and the establishment of Mob rule. That, of course, would be rude and we can't have that.
And the WH. Then they can finish off what's left of your democracy, retract help to Ukraine and hand the keys over to Putin. Tucker will be named King.

Yeah, I still have hope esp. with the new revelations of Thomas that he knows this is a losing battle for his legacy esp. if somehow Crow decided to take a subpoena fight to the SC.

If I were Thomas I would worry that my benefactors might decide they would be safer if I were dead. I'd be worried I might not wake up to read the bull shit confessional suicide note I left on the table where I seemed to have blown off my head.

Here's a much more specific example of Thomas reversing his own prior view of the law purely in favor of his best buddies billionaires viewpoint - on Chevron
"Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas changed his position on one of America’s most significant regulatory doctrines after his wife reportedly accepted secret payments from a shadowy conservative network pushing for the change. Thomas’s shift also came while he was receiving lavish gifts from a billionaire linked to other groups criticizing the same doctrine — which is now headed back to the high court.

The so-called “Chevron deference” doctrine stipulates that the executive branch — not the federal courts — has the power to interpret laws passed by Congress in certain circumstances. Conservatives for years have fought to overturn the doctrine, a move that would empower legal challenges to federal agency regulations on everything from climate policy to workplace safety to overtime pay.

Thomas wrote a landmark Supreme Court opinion upholding the doctrine in 2005, but began questioning it a decade later, before eventually renouncing his past opinion in 2020 and claiming that the doctrine itself might be unconstitutional."

I don't know why Republicans are bitching about Hunter Biden taking money when he doesn't even work for the government. Yet they are quiet on SCOTUS.
Welcome to politics.

Should make people wonder about the process of politics. I mean, what do these elected maga republican members really believe in??? You know that most of the pro gun pro assault weapon republicans are not that pro gun, not really. But as a republican and as a politician they must go along with the flow of the party.

Hey, I know that Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden are absolutely against assault weapons and absolutely want more gun control laws. I know when a democrat in congress says he or she is against guns or against air pollution or for climate protections or against demonizing Trans and Gays and minorities, I know that democrats in congress actually mean what they say. Democrats in congress really do believe in what they preach, but the republicans???

There is a thing called THE ESTABLISHMENT. Maga republicans wage war against what they refer to as THE ESTABLISHMENT. But guess what.... those maga republicans have become THE ESTABLISHMENT. Have become their own version of THE ESTABLISHMENT not any different from that old establishment they cry so loud against.
In the past, to be part of THE ESTABLISHMENT was to fall in line. Support the old-ways. Playing the game. Yet now we have a new batch of THE ESTABLISHMENT, the maga people who go along. Who also play the game. Who fall in line.
The maga republicans of today are THE ESTABLISHMENT, yet too dumb to realize it.

Democrats believe in their convictions. Republicans in congress simply go along. Republicans in congress know assault weapons are bad and should not exist. Republicans in congress know that children should not be blown away by an assault weapon. And republicans in congress know that the NRA is wrong, totally wrong, on guns. However... by joining the establishment, this new establishment of maga republicans, they know it gets them votes and gets them elected. And so, one must wonder WHAT DO THEY REALLY STAND FOR? WHAT DO THEY REALLY BELIEVE IN?

These maga republicans have no accountability to the voter. Oh sure, they play up to the voter to get the votes but then once elected are only accountable to THE ESTABLISHMENT. Exactly the same establishment bull-crappy they claimed to be so much against.

Now THERE would be a perfect comeback for a debating Joe Biden or any debating democrat, to refer to maga republicans as part of THE ESTABLISHMENT. Then, explain it. Especially explain it to those maga republican candidates on the debate stage. Yes Ron DeSantis, yes Donald Trump, yes MTG, you are all part of the establishment. The maga establishment, exactly like the Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Bob Dole establishment.

Nah, they've still got a number of key GQP wish-list cases lined up to overturn every precedent that leans against current "conservatives" beliefs ~ can't lose him just yet.

What you see is all about whose ox gets gored. If he's on your teem is fantastic but if he strays from the orthodoxy of the group then he's a heretic. He is neither. He is a person who has suffered pain and believes he can end it by destroying what he imagines has made him feel it. He is a human being who is asleep like all of us inwardly divided against ourselves.

I find it amusing that people think I'm unhinged because I just want to be prepared if the clearly mid-stage Nazi fascist party decides to go full fascist. In case. Have a plan. Hopefully not have to use it but fucking have it. And that by preventing an active coup, you are actually being a bad person by trying to stop it. That's catch-22 lunacy thinking and logic. It's insanity.

I only have centuries of modern history to prove that populations are usually woefully unprepared for these exact situations because they just can't fathom any of it happening to the point of being so naive about it, as we see here by some people. As iwshane pointed out, most people are too scared or too naive to admit what is right in front of their face in this situation.

What I find unhinged are thinking things like, oh we can just vote this away and pack courts and fix the EC and unbalanced Senate and House it will be ok, and clearly evil people like Ron DeSantis and his ilk would respect our core institutions, etc...I'm sorry. If you can't see that obviousness staring you right in the face, it's a big fucking problem. It's just moronic self-delusion. That's the insanity.

Don't you have a gun to go caress?

I’m guessing but I imagine I was probably a one the very first to identify you publicly in posts here as delusional, paranoid terrified actually, sitting on a power cage of repressed rage that you project outwardly as fear of the right wing. All of the horrible now pretty decently exposed dangerously insane characteristics revealed by the right in recent years, I have known were there likely before you were born.

As I have told you it isn’t the facts that you see that are in error, it’s the way you deal with it, how it affects you, that’s, well, nuts.

Part of your problem is your ego; you don’t like being told you are crazy. But I am well acquainted and intimately familiar with it. You should be able to guess why. I just don’t have the same ego problem you do. I have more humility. Pardon me for being egotistical enough, or ego -less enough to say so. I have trouble differentiating which is which.

I am low on battery so may say more on this later so for now let me ask you what your plan is. What constitutes preparation. In the meantime I’ll go put two guns in my pants and get ready for the first Nazi that rings my door bell yelling 'Heil Trump'.

That's why Dems need to lean into Senate hearings ASAP. Now that Feinstein is back and if they can keep her awake, issue subpoenas to every person that gave gits to not only Thomas but any justice. Make hearings public and under oath. If those fucks don't show arrest them. Senate has the authority.

Let me see if I can help.

1. You insults are fine with me, welcome in fact. The more shit you dump on me the less you may have for others. It's cathartic and good for my rose garden.

2. I asked you what preparation you are talking about. What sort of plan should I have? Since you are the one raving about this, surely you have some idea of what it should be.

3. I haven't smoked or used drugs of any kind in decades so that angle buys you nothing.

4. I have not shot a gun in decades either. For me the attraction to them is a meld of the artistic genius of form and function. They are genius examples of human art and engineering. Fondling them is a sensual wonder but shooting them is unpleasant on the ears and the kick is physically, take it or leave it. OK in moderation. Now sticking a silencer on one, now that would be sweet, except that I live among metrosexuals that love to diddle their Iphones instead and have banned them. You know how it is with hypocrites, terrified their kids will be shot as the kids are neglected as they stare into their screens.

So let's hear your fucking plan. You avoid facts like a Republican. Gimme da plan, man!

And here Justice Kagan was worried that accepting lox and bagels would violate their ethics rules. 😲
So she turned them down.

Justice Elena Kagan was worried about the ethics of accepting bagels from friends, while Clarence Thomas was enjoying expensive vacations paid for by a GOP megadonor: report

Glad to see some of the SC Justices understand and respect the guidelines. If only the conservatives on the bench could follow suit.

I think you must have thought I was talking about Thomas killing himself, perhaps out of shame. I had no such thoughts. I was just thinking just thinking what I would do if I were an unprincipled morally vacuous criminal like Thomas and especially his benefactor. If I were as unprincipled as these people seem to be, I would be thinking that rather than Thomas, shame or no shame, ratting me out to save his own skin, I would have him killed and make it look like a suicide. That's what I would worry about if I were he.

So the question I ask after all of the glaring revelations concerning Thomas' unethical behavior re receiving millions in gifts is: would he have received these same gifts if he were a mere private citizen living in the 'burbs with his hefty magat wife stirring the Big Lie bullshit in DC? If the answer is no, then why hasn't his ass been roasted over the coals of a Garland napalm soaked pyre yet?

Apparently elena kagan wasn't one of the trusted individuals thomas consulted when he was taking these massive gifts.... I would very much like to know who they are because as far as I can tell, everyone thinks that he did was totally wrong.

Garland makes me sick. He's a fucking ethical coward afraid the right might say mean things if he did his job. Of course, I may completely misread what I think it is I see. Perhaps he knows better than me.

I think you mean everybody who takes seriously the notion that judges must not have even an appearance of actions that would call their impartiality to question. I think for a few pieces of silver Thomas wrote himself into American history as a piece of shit.

SCOTUS has essentially legalized bribery in the last ten years or so, so I would be surprised to see anything happen to Menendez.

What law would you have him prosecuted under? The scandal here isn't that this is illegal, it's that it's LEGAL.
