Resigning seems a bit extreme, and is clearly not going to happen (I don't care either way because I don't much like him anyway) but I slightly disagree about the onerousness. As a politician he ought to have known better - blackingup (or browning up) for almost any reason is a bad idea. And 2001 is not very long ago, most people wised-up about that at least by the '80s. Seems a bit dim of him, frankly.

Plus apparently he's up against a party led by a guy of Indian (South Asian, to Americans) descent, which makes it all the more embarrassing.

Black/brown face isn't inherently racist in my opinion. Also, I don't see Trump as a liar. Seems I understand what his policy goals are and what he's trying to achieve and see him working towards that. Not sure why lefties can't understand it and hang on every figure of speech.

There are different rules, but the rules are strict for those on the left and there are no rules for those on the right. What you perceive to be the difference is actually the difference in how the subject of the scandal responds. Notice he immediately admits it was wrong to do and gives a sincere apology. That is all people are asking for in a situation like this, and I expect most people to move on and forget it now. Someone on the right would instead whine about how it was a different time and how they are the real victim and that just pisses people off more.

I don't really disagree. The idea that his costume at that time should be viewed offensively now seems like a stretch. There doesn't seem to be anything malicious about it. If he had an actual blackface costume with the intent of making fun of minorities, yeah I could see some outrage about something like that, and even understand calls for resignation even if he apologized. For this situation, while I agree the idea of it being offensive in any way is absurd to me, it isn't hard to just apologize and move on.

As for who writes the rules, the voters do, as they should. This is why I said conservative politicians are held to a much lower standard than liberals. For liberals, if you wear a tan suit, it will be such a big deal that people will remember the scandal years later. For conservatives, preying on 15yo girls at the local mall won't stop 650,000 people from voting for you.
