K6-2 is becoming obsolete!

I can't believe I use 3 of it in my 3 system

Just a few week ago.
Now I am sad, I knew I did the wrong thing

It aint a gaming machine, I try to play quake3D
at 582mhz, and 550mhz and it crawl like a turtle how slow you say about 33fps
Played this on a friend computer he has
celeron 500 and it was like 62fps
He only payed 400 buck, it an emachine
this K6-2 system costed me 500 buck to built
All he did was go to the store to buy!
This took me about 3 days to put it all together
He just crack at how pathetic my computer is.
Sisoft's benchmark on celeron is quite wrong!
It is more powerful then that
Well I ran some Amiga Emulator, and it seem to be
twice as fast!
Ran other emulator too such as MAME playing
pacmania
on his celeron it was 60 FPS
on mine it is 30 FPS
crap!
we both have crappy AGP 2x
so you tell me.

Something is amiss with your system. I get around 40fps in Quake2 very easily with a Banshee and a K6-2 300! In Quake 3 arena with conservative settings, I still can average aropund 28fps.

How about your complete system specs?

We're talking about quake3 dude,
Im sure it will run a little faster on Quake2
I have an AGP 2x S3 4meg Trio
32MB of ram
on this setup
K6-2 550 at 582mhz
Windows98 First Edition
Oh well this sucks man I have to bare with this for another year before I go duron system that blow away even celeron hehe
I read on AMD site that they are selling the K6-2 500-550 until
nobody want them anymore, there is no more after that say 600 ETC
The duron is to replace K6-2
It look like I'll have to spend a hell of alot more huh
not just cpu, motherboard
perhap more memory and better VGA card as well?
Got ancient 2gig maxtor and 1.6gig maxtor too.
Also I think your quake3d would probably do about 15-17FPS
on a crappy VGA card like I have.

40fps in Quake 2, eh? Thats slow enough to make me cry.

I'm getting well over 200fps in Quake 2. Two years ago I had a K6-2 300MHz system and was getting about the same frame rate. Now, when I hear people getting 40fps in a system similar to what I once owned, it seems way outdated.

I absolulely do not believe that a celeron 400 e-machine can get 60fps on quake3. No way in hell it can do that. emachines uses some crap ati chipset.

Its a 500 not 400
Sandra say it perform like a K6-2 600mhz
But I think it more then that,
cause benchmarking like this is inaccurate
He has a Virge S3 2X 4meg
For some reason it does 62 FPS
while mine is only 32 FPS in
same resolution of 800 x 600
Sure his Emachine may have crappy component
but it that Celeron Cpu that blows away my K6-2
Everything seem to be faster on his computer and
he got a crappy AMI BIOS too
Don't know man, look like even people who know nothing about computer
make better choice then we did.
He got a crystal sound 16 onboard too and it
has full SB16 compatible in DOS
So now you know it aint alway best to built your own.
Maybe I am going to quit this hobby of mine, it isn't worth all the hassle.

Try 3dMark 2000 on both of your machines and see what the scores are. You might want to get a better graphics card, voodoo 3 2k and 3k are getting pretty cheap with some of the deals floating around.

Dude the k6-2 is ancient these days. Its like 2 years old technology. Your machine is old.

go build a decent celery II clocked to 850 ($140-$150) decent bx motherboard ($100), Geforce SDR ($100-120), get a PCI Audio card $15, slap it together, and you'll smoke that celeron in q3a easily.

K6 been around forever with 3d now technology added to K6-2

I agree my next system will be based on Celeron, just the cpu alone
kicks ass with even crappy VGA, and Modem.
Yeap will get jumperless motherboard too, ABIT.
Not ASUS, not going to fool around with jumpers.
BottomLine is I am screwed already put about 1500 dollar worth of money into 3 K6-2 machine.
2 K6-2 500, and 1 K6-2 550
Am I stupid? Yes. I mean who in the world would buy these ancient
stuff anymore and I knew nothing about processor other then K6-2 being a little cheaper.
Wish I knew about this a little sooner.

well you both have too different motherboards as well,
some boards for the k6 need some tweeking,
update your agp driver?
go to your bios and disable agp turbo or agp 2x to 1x
you both have very cheap video cards and your cheap card might not work well with your chipset.
buy the voodoo3 2000 pci card and see if that celary is still better.
also get a bigger harddrive.

I rephrase, there is no way in hell he can get
a 500mhz Celeron with a Virge S3 2X 4meg!?!?!??! That card is worst than a voodoo1!!!! No, ask him again, he either has a voodoo2 card in there or there is no way on earth he can even reach 30fps on quake3. Just no way.

Does anybody here belive that a Celeron 500 with a Virge S3 2X 4meg can reach 62 fps at 800 X 600 quake3? Not even a full blown 1gig PIII can do that.

I had a 300A(450) and voodoo2 12 meg setup and I couldn't get 60fps in quake3

Don't believe me check out anandtech's benchmark in Quake3
at 640 * 480

Celeron 533
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Ultra 32MB (default clock 150/183)
128MB PC133 Corsair SDRAM

The result using this far superior setup is only 48.9 fps

I doubt a Celeron 500 running off a much worst S3 virge and 800 * 600
can even approach 25fps.

Just to be clear, are you sure he's running Quake 3 and not Quake original? Quake yeah it's possible, but Quake3 no way.
