The k6-2+ chips are quite different from their regular k6-2 counterparts. the +'s are made on a .18 process enabling them to run faster and cooler than the classic k6-2s which made on the .25 process and in turn ran hotter and not as fast. the + chips also feature 128kb (in the case of the k6-2+) and 256kb ( k6-3+) of onboard cache thus speeding up the chip considerably and giving super 7 owners one last gasp of oxygen. amd created the k6-2/3 + chips for mobile use but many people have ran them fine in their desktop computers.
if you are familiar with/ or would like ot learn about overclocking, those + chips overclock very well, compared to the older k6-2/3 and speeds of 600+ are obtainable.

regarding the wording on tigerdirect.com, yes they probably mean amd k6-2+. my father purchased a couple k6-3+s from them a while back and they are able to run in excess of 550+ and 600+ respectively.

K6-3 has a built-in L2 cache (256k), The K6-3+ is the same except voltage goes down to 2.0 volts (make sure mobos support this voltage). The orginal K6-2 has no built in L2 cache and runs at 2.2 volts while the K6-2+ has a built in 128k L2 cache and runs at 2.0volts.

The "+" versions also have the enhanced 3dNow! instructions which were originally found in the Athlon.

$40 for a K6-2+ when you can get 750 Durons for $35..... doesn't that seem a little overpriced?

in general, yes...i see absolutely no reason to build a new system based around any k6-2 or k6-3 (even the + version) cpu. the only reason to buy one of these chips is if you already have a complete k6-2 system with a slower processor or a dead processor and only have $50 or so to spend...a k6-2+ can give you a boost or replace the cpu at a price much lower than even buying a new duron/mobo/hsf (which would probably mean new case and ps also since many k6-x rigs are AT not ATX). also, the k6-2/3+ cpu's were meant for laptops, so if someone has a laptop based on this chip they would certainly buy a k6-2+ for $40.

I got a K6-2+ 450 from Tiger for $34.50 about a month ago to upgrade a P200/ASUS SP97-V system that a friend got for free. They're not multiplier locked from everything I've read, so it really doesn't matter what speed you buy. I've seen K6-2+ OCs up to 600MHz with conventional cooling. The one I got works great at 6X/87MHz FSB = 500MHz with the old Pentium fan, which are the highest multiplier and FSB settings this board has (the 87 FSB is undocumented and the 6X is 2X remapped). This is one of the few early Socket7 (i.e. non-Super7) boards that unofficially supports 2.0V (via undocumented jumper settings) and officially supports 2.1V, which also works fine. Also had to update the BIOS.

This chip was completely unlocked and increased the system performance by about 2.5X over the P200. A great Socket7 upgrade for $35, but for mobos that support 2.0-2.1V ONLY.

Read Anand's recent articles on these chips. I would NOT spend extra for a K6-3+ over a K6-2+ as the performance improvement is negligible in most benchmarks they documented. They're also hard to find and overpriced.

What's a good MB to use with a K6-2+ ?
I bought one for an A-open AX59pro.
It would boot-up but I would then get a timing error.
(Even though the latest BIOS actually identified it correctly?)
I then bought a regular K6-2 and it worked properly.
Now I want to do something useful with the K6-2+ .

Motherboard recommendations?

imho, the best thing to do with that k6-2+ is sell it...it's not worth building a system around (or even buying a new mobo).

Greg: You're sure it's the latest BIOS? Remember you can't run them at more than 2.0-2.1V MAX, so that may also be a problem. Even 2.2V is too much. If it's being overvolted it could easily overheat and give you errors. The fact that the K6-2 works and the K6-2+ doesn't makes me think it may be a voltage issue. The AMDZone forum is a great place for info on the whole K6 family. Someone there may have information on that A-Open board.

I wouldn't buy a new mobo, unless it was really cheap, just to run a K6-2+ over a K6-2. You probably won't have a hard time selling the CPU as they're kind of hard to find.

Thanks for the info Killer Ape.
The .pdf manual actually lists a V-core from 1.3 to 3.5 volts.
I used the latest bios, but I don't have the newest revision of the board.
I noticed that Tom's Hware used this board in their K6-2+ review.
Oh Well.
I'll try looking over at AMDzone.

Greg: One other thing is to use a utility like WCPUID, if you're haven't already, to check what the real speed of the CPU is. As you may know, sometimes the BIOS reports incorrectly. It may be possible that the multiplier could be too high even if the BIOS reports the speed as "correct". The ASUS board I worked on would report anything at 400 MHz or faster as "400 MHz" even though the proc was running at 500. In other words you may be overclocking the chip faster than it's stable without knowing it. This is especially easy to do if the mobo remaps lower multipliers to higher ones (i.e. 2X=6X)...probably not the case again if the K6-2 works. Just a guess. I would think the newer BIOS should heve fixed this though. Unfortunately, you need to get into Windows long enough to run WCPUID.

That article at Tom's is good. I didn't realize it was the same mobo he used. I wouldn't give up just yet. If you can get 600MHz out of the proc that would be pretty sweet. Check everything one more time (sorry to keep harping on it, but especially the voltage - not sure if that mobo uses jumpers or BIOS settings).

Good luck.

Thanks again Killer Ape.
It actually has DIP switches.
I'll probably just sell the processor if I can.
I was just thinking if I could find a decent & cheap
board for an AT case, I could swap it out with a P100
I've got.
Durons are cheap enough, I'll probably wait & just build a new system
with an ATX case.

NOOOO!
That's not what I'm running on now.
It's the hand-me-down approach.
I upgraded my 15yo nephews computer to
a Pentium166 with a VooDoo3 card.
So his old one is lying dormant
in my livingroom. My uncle's still running
a 486/66 with a 33.6 modem.
I actually upgraded his from a 386/486 conversion
and a 14.4 modem.

If you need to put more vcore voltage than 2.0-2.1 volts, just buy a GW FOP32. They are selling for less than $20 now and will give more cooling than you will ever need for a K6-2+ or 3+. BTW, I built a K6-3+ system for my older brother a about 4 months ago. Got it running @ 600 mhz w/2.3 volts vcore. The thermistor probe in the socket (Tyan S1598) never reports temps higher than 95.
