Im new to the board and Im hoping to get some help with my motherboard sound. My problem is theres a NVidia MCP-D
Processor on this board that is suppose to provied Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. HOW? The board comes with this
card called a CNR card that has 3 port holes for what look like speaker connections. One says R, another C/W, and the last
S/PDIF?? What the heck is that? The only sound I get by pluging in my speakers to this motherboard is by pluging the speakers
in to the motherboards speaker out port built in. But where do the sub and the center speaker plug in to? Does this mean
I need to still buy a sound card with the port holes to split the sound out? Im trying to play DVD's using the surround sound so this
is the reason for the question.

Any and all help would be appreicated. Thanks,
Andy

Here are your options:

1. Buy a big fat RCA cable (Digital audio, maybe gold-plated, maybe called S/PDIF cable, but in reality it is just an RCA cable) and plug one end into your computer's S/PDIF port and the other end into you Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3) receiver or computer speaker's S/PDIF input. Mind you, if you're going with computer speakers, they have to be 5.1 and there has to be a decoder in the unit for this to work.

2. Assuming you have a pair of speakers that are 5.1 or 4.1 and only accept analog in, plug in all the 1/8" sound jacks and this might work (I think this won't though because it doesn't look like you have all six analog outputs on this motherboard).

If you don't have a 5.1 receiver or speakers, you're probably hosed, but no big deal, 5.1 speakers can be had for as cheap as ~$170.

the problem is that your source sound needs to be in the 5.1 format. you can have winamp output to a 5.1 speaker setup but you have to set that option in the preferences. check out the MSI site and look for a download to test your sound system. i swear it works. you may have to set your audio output in your DVD software.
