Why don't you try to clear the CMOS using jumpers and also look at the different settings of your chip. It looks to me like you have some ram problems. What brand and type of ram do you have? Some motherboards are picky about ram.

I hope this helps!

tried cmos,power supply,i was running 256 pny ddr 2100 and tried crucial 256 meg pc133.the funny thing is it will run all day as long as it stays on.disabled power managment also.i seen on some other site a mention about the capacitors or something does not have enough time to discharge,but no mention of a fix. my second machine is running xp1600 with the same mobo and same ddr ram and is fine except it wont see whats on my second drive,it recognizes it in bios and as drive D but shows empty?

I have a similair cold-boot problem with my k7S5A, about 25% of the time when booting, it stalls (blank screen) after post, CD-ROM spins up, HD spins up, Power LED and all, but just sits there? When I reset it, it boots into WinXP 100% of the time. I'm running a Antec 430watt TruePower p.s so you can throw that out the window as being the culprit. I've fooled around with BIOS settings, power management, ect. - can't seem to fix the problem.

I've heard of the capacitor discharge thing and it very well could be that, I don't know though? This would seem to be the case for me since it always boots into the OS after hitting the reset button (give the board chance to chargeup). I'm going to fool around with BIOS a little more to see if I can't stall the startup just long enough so it will finish posting and boot into the OS - if this is the case then I believe this thing just needs a little time to 'wake-up'.

If it has been running, I can shut it down and it always boots right back up when I want it too. Heh, it's like an old car I use to own, once it's going it goes great, sometimes it has a little trouble starting!

I'm going to be switching memory brands soon with all different flavors of SDR and DDR and see if it makes a difference?

Not to worry, hanging up on reboot seems to be normal for this board. Mine freaked me out the first day I had it. I cut the AC power for a few minutes and when I tried rebooting, nada. The cd room light came on periodically but that, the power indicator and the hs fan were the only signs of life. When I tried again a couple of hours later, it booted right up. My board was only 10 months old when it took gas last Saturday Now it won't boot, period.: disgust;

Instant hang on reboot often is caused by the PSU's 5Vstandby rail being too weak. 2 amps required here.

Boot problems caused by mass storage hangs might be related to a BIOS screwup ... introduced in the Feb 2002 BIOS, fixed in the April one, returned in the June one, and gone again in the brandnew August one (not yet available on the ECS site, but released on the PC-Chips site already, the M830 being the same board).

regards, Peter
