Currently using an Asrock k7s8x.
Asrock K7S8X specs

I'm having so many issues with it i'd like to find something comparable.
i'm partial to Asus, but will consider something else.
Anyone have any suggestions?

If you want to spare yourself a reinstall, you might want to try a PC-Chips M848A v2.1. That gets you the same SiS chipset (746, 746FX, 748 are practically identical).
But anyway, I saw nothing inherently wrong with the ASRock board you have there. What's the problem?

Personally, I love the board, but the onboard sound has caused some issues with my sound card.
No way around it, just have to live with clicks.

Second, and this may not even be the mobo.
I'm having issues with the IDEs. i've tried installing slave drives, and they never show up in windows.
they show up on boot up and in CMOS, in device manger as generic type 47's but not in my computer Nor am I able to format them in DOS.
AND occasionally, upon boot up, it does not crecognize the secondary IDE devices.

Now that I say that, it doesn't sound like the mobo at all.

Hmmm...
Any ideas?
I'm getting desperate.

Have you tried using CS (cable select) on your drives? there's a jumper on your drives to put it on cable select, then put the blue end to the mobo the Grey to slave & black for master, this should solve your ide problems.

As for your sound make sure you disable the onboard sound in the bios if you use an other card.

Thanks Budman, yes I've run both cable select and slave setting. neither work.
Odd thing, when setting these drives up on the secondaty IDE channel, (currently where the CD and Zip are) they (80 gig HD) came up as generic type 80, showed up on boot, CMOS and device manger fine, but still not in Winderz.
It had worked fine at one point, then simply quit one day.
and am having trouble with the CD and zip showing up ccasionally. Usually resolved by a restart. Is that an IDE issue?
I have all the new drivers and bios.

I did disable the onboard sound. Problem being it just didn't have the 'oomf' to do what I needed it to do.
The Audigy 2 I now use works wonders, just has some issues with the c-media auido device...no biggie though.

You might also try changing the 4 pin power lead off the power supply on your hardrive. Sometimes, they go bad. I have that problem with an enlight power supply, a good brand. Only 1 doesn't work, but it has plenty of extra leads.

Have you tried using Windows Storage Manager? Before you do that, drive letters WON'T EVER show up in "My Computer". The drive physically being there and recognized by the hardware driver doesn't mean there's a valid file system on it that could be assigned a drive letter. You've simply missed a step, methinks.

Windows Storage manager? INTERESTING! This is showing my lack of knowledge here, but I've never heard of it. How do I access it? on Win98SE? (dinosaur, I know)
I had a 40 gig slave drive that worked fine for a few months, then simply quit and started showing up in the hardware but not in winderz.

WE$@$%@#!@#$#%!!!!!!!

Ok, I hooked up the 40 gig slave, just for s#its and giggles.
Upon start up, I lost recognizability to my zip and CD rom as well.
I shut down, take the 40 gig off, reboot and now I get absolutely nothing.

Me thinks it's time to go see a pro.

But on Windows 98SE, you'll have to use FDISK and FORMAT, since this Windows is still DOS with a nice wrapper.
