Problem solved! We went to the market a few minutes ago, and we bought a Zalman CNPS7700B-CU. This one is much better than the low budget Arctic Cooling Ultra64-TC it had first, right? Right? RIGHT?

Cool I figured that when I build my rig I'll invest in the Thermalright XP-90 HSF and hopefully that will eliminate the air cooling as the limiting factor in my overclock.

The stock cooler isn't so bad, that is what I'm using, with the included thermal pad. I use Cool N' Quiet and it's reading 33C on EVEREST.

cobalt, the stock HSF is pretty good and if you have a real gem of a chip then it won't prevent it from hitting those high clocks.

However after reading reviews including this one:

http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/thermalright_xp-90/index.shtml

It's obvious that the temperature difference between the stock HSF & the XP-90 is significant enough that it could affect the clock potential of the chip.

Besides if you can get an OEM Venice 3000+ at eWiz for $120 & the XP-90 retail for $30 from www.svc.com then the total cost about the same as the retail Venice 3000+.

Cobalt, have you had problems since enabling Cool N Quiet? Almost every A64 OCing guide I read says to disable that feature, but I would like to try it out as my case noise wan't infact the NB fan, but the CPU fan, which is running faster than all hell.

Also, check for my last post up the page, I asked you about some RAM settings but I think you might've overlooked that post. thx

Cool N' Quiet works great for me. When surfing the web, etc. voltage is at 1.3 or 1.2, clock speed at 1.5ghz. Keeps temps quite low at 34C right now, moves to middle 40s~ at load when gaming or photoshop or something with voltage at 1.6 and clockspeed at 2.7ghz.

EDIT: I have using Cool N' Quiet the whole time I've been running at 2.7ghz.

That's interesting cobalt. So does the BIOS on the motherboard remember the overclocking setting when Cool'n'Quiet is enabled?

I always thought that if Cool'n'Quiet was enabled for an overclock it would reset any changes to achieve the overclock.

Yeah the motherboard remembered the settings.

Ok, I finally had some free time today and was going to try a little overclocking of my Venice 3000+ on the Neo4-f.

I startup CPU-Z and notice a couple of things under the CPU tab that really bother me:

- the voltage is 1.040V
- the multiplier is x5
- the HTT is 200.9Mhz
- The core speed is 1004.6Mhz

Is my CPU running severly underclocked right now???

I went into the BIOS and checked the settings - CPU VCore was set to 1.45 (which is the maximum, for some reason). The multiplier was set to x9. FSB was 200. The Bios said the current clock was 1800Mhz.

However, once in Windows, I get the settings above. MSI's CoreCenter also shows 200 x5 = 1000Mhz. And, unsurprisingly, the CPU is running at a cool 32C on air.

Am I just misreading something, or is my CPU really running at 1Ghz? And how the hell can I get it to at least the normal 1.8?

My guess is that this is a bios issue (given all the problems w/ MSI's bios), but I wanted to check. I have 1.5 installed right now. Should I try flashing to the 1.71 beta? What about the 1.73 beta?

Also, I don't have a floppy drive installed right now - could I make a bootable CD and do it from there?

Nothing is wrong. Cool N' Quiet is on. When you aren't doing anyting CPU intensive, it drops the multiplier to 5x and drops the voltage. Mine right now is at 1.5ghz (300x5) and 1.3v.

Cool N' Quiet is disabled... Also, I can't seem to overclock this thing worth anything - I think I'm experience that 219FSB bios bug.

can someone walk me through flashing the bios and not destroying my mobo?

Then go into your BIOS and go to the CPU multiplier. I assume it's set to "Start up". Make it 9x.

EDIT: And put the voltage to 1.45v, which should be stock. If you want to overvolt when you OC, you need to use the percentages in the Over Vid menu.

the multiplier is/was set to 9x. And the voltage was at 1.45. which is why i'm suspecting this is a bios issue.

I'm getting the same thing as you brikis. It's quite frustrating.

Do you have everest on your computer? When I go into everest, it reads the cpu multiplier as 5x, even though its clearly 9x in the bios? This might be causing my underclock. thanks

nope, no everest. and yeah, in bios, it clearly lists that its x9 and the CPU clock is 1800.

however, CPU-Z and CoreCenter both show the multiplier as x5 and the CPU clock at 1000.

yeah, 1.5.

however, i'm still not positive on how to flash the bios, and since i know that's a fairly dangerous thing to do wrong, was hoping someone could walk me through it...

any help is appreciated

Get rid of CoreCenter... It's putting Cool N' Quiet on, thats why the multiplier is 5x. Uninstall CoreCenter, go in BIOS and check again if CNQ is off.

I fixed it! I flashed to 1.71b (you can find it in this topic) and now it works fine! yay! If you're worried about flashing, use winflash, as it'll do it from the windows environment. Enjoy your newfound speed.

I just downloaded Winflash and the 1.71b bios (it's called W7125NMS171.bin, right?), but i'm not sure how to use the program.

That is, which blocks do I want to update? BootBlock? MainBlock? DMI block? Should I check the Clear CMOS option?

Thanks

nice, thanks!

with 1.71b, my CPU is properly running at 1800 with the x9 multiplier. sweet

In some of the earlier bios revisions (not all), Cool N Quiet was enabled even if you selected "disable" in bios . 1.3, 1.6, 1.71b did not have that problem for me but then again I wasn't running Core Cell either.
