Psychological stress could be a more current version of what was bandied about considerably in psychiatric and psychology circles as "psychosomatic." Freud pretty much coined that. I wouldn't dismiss it. And Jr's sister having a case doesn't disprove psychosomatic origins. It strengthens the genetic argument but doesn't guarantee it at all. In any case, when I hear him I wish I didn't even before I manage to make any sense of his utterances simply because the very sound of his voice is offensive.

I absolutely dismiss the notion of 'psychosomatic'. They keep changing the terminology to make it sound more science-y (from hysteria and the 'wandering womb' to conversion disorder or somatisation disorder, to 'functional neurological disorder') but it's the same thing in the end - demonic possession. The invisible demons doing their demonic work, conveniently explaining away anything doctors can't currently understand, thus doing the important work of protecting the medical ego.

You shouldn't, psychosomatic effects are very real, I've had experience with it directly. The mind's state can affect the body, and can create symptoms that one feels to be real even if there's no physiological cause.

I played on metal jungle gyms and never wore a bike helmet until I was an adult. Somehow, I survived.

You say that like you’re proud of yourself. Instead, you should be thankful. Thousands upon thousands of kids DIDN’T survive those conditions, at least intact.

Honestly, while govt regulations don’t seem to sometimes have any rhyme or reason, safer conditions for kids are nothing to belittle.

Traumatic brain injury is the most common cause of death in little kids. CDC has reams of research on how, why, etc on this.

And one of the problems is a little kid’s cranial anatomy isn’t like an adult’s. Poses unique challenges to prevent/mitigate to in kids.

And it’s hard to compare today to like the 1950’s-1970’s because no one gave much of a crap back then and data was not retained, much less examined.

Same argument that gets used for the existence of Gods, angels and demons.

Remember that he doesn't believe in the placebo effect either, and is emotionally guided in this due to his tribulations with a rare condition that was dismissed as psychosomatic. I think it's unlikely you'll guide him past that bias.

Huh? I've never been presented proof that a god of any kind can create a measurable effect on the human body. Stress can, however, as can the belief that something is happening. Placebo effect works both ways.

I forgot that, fair enough.

Please back the fuck out.

Just going to be a shit throwing contest anyways and its best avoided.
Well....normally I'd agree. "Debates" are nothing but poo-flinging gladiatorial contests for apes with short attention spans. We just can't have a candidate talk at length about anything, that would be boooring.

But

Trump is almost certainly going to hurt himself at one of them with moderates (I read today he's down something like 35 points to moderates) so I'm all for the poo-flinging. There's a small chance he'd surprise and act like an adult, but based on recent evidence I consider it likely he'll just meander and sound old, tired and borderline deranged.

You have issues. Demons are imaginary. Psychosomatic physical manifestations of stress, acknowledged or not are real.

Confirmation bias, how many of your peers lost a few percentage points from blows to the head?
You can lose a lot more than a few percentage points.

I rode my bicycle for decades in dangerous urban environments, was (and still am) so at one with my bike that it feels like part of my body. I used to ride thoroughfares, but came to realize there was no way to be safe doing so, so nowadays I search for alternate routes. I also do my best to have enough room between me and parked cars that a careless driver opening their door won't injure me. I have been doored a couple times. Got off cheap. A friend of mine had to have his jaw wired together after being doored.

I was so safe on my bike I never wore a helmet in the city until one day, 5 years ago, my physical therapist, when I told her I didn't wear a helmet told me that one accident, one concussion, would change my life forever. Next time I saw her I showed her my helmet! I have worn it routinely since. After a while I asked myself why I didn't also wear it when skating. Then I started wearing it on skates too.

I also wear gloves on my bike, on skates and hiking. Skating and hiking, gloves have saved my skin & ass several times.
