Kaspersky Troubles

Alright, a while back my brother found a Keylogger site that I posted here. A recommended solution was for him to get Kaspersky since he was using Avast. Well, he could not afford to buy the anti-virus with him starting college as his budget is razor thin, so he got the Free-trial just to get rid of the Keylogger on his computer. Other than that, he was happy with Kaspersky.

Here is the problem:

His free-trial ended a few days ago and Un-installed it without problems. However, when he looked into the Program Files, the Kaspersky folder and it's contents were still there. He was unable to delete them from there, so he went into Safe-Mode and manually deleted the files.

After that, he rebooted and tried to load up Avast Anti-virus but it gave him this message: "Avast is not running properly because kaspersky is still running". I am unable to drive to his place at the moment so I am going by what he is telling me.

If anyone knows that is going on and how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't sound like the uninstallation completed successfully. Did he remember to right-click the red K and choose Exit first? If not, you might want to try reinstalling the trial version, then uninstalling it after right-clicking the K and choosing "Exit."

Also, if you're going to use something else besides full-ride Kaspersky, consider using AntiVir or else AOL Kaspersky. AntiVir has some pretty good heuristics, AOL Kaspersky has great signature-based detection; both of them are a better pick than Avast IMHO, and both are free for home use.

If you pick AntiVir, then go into the Configure AntiVir, switch it to Expert mode, and go through all the sub-panels and max out the heuristics, enable the rootkit scanner, and turn on the optional detections. If you pick AOL Kaspersky, then my link above has configuration suggestions (the nuke-on-sight-no-questions-asked suggestion is extra-important if they're not all computer-savvy users).

Well, sadly to report, but he is unable to re-install Kaspersky due to files still being present on his computer. I am going to go take a look for myself and see what I can find. When I find out what is going on, I will post the results from his place.

not directly related but Kaspersky has a free version. i think it's the antivirus only without the firewall and other stuff.

the Kaspersky processes appear as "avp.exe" in task manager. you can just kill them there directly, unless he password protected them.
