Kaspersky vs Norton

In light of a very recent bout with a nasty virus on my PC, I've surrended to a format and want to follow up with a damn good antivirus program. Previously I was using Grisoft AVG Pro, but it obviously didn't do its job.
I'm looking at Norton AV 2006, and Kaspersky AV Personal 5.0 Both seem to have high detection rates, but I seem to remember much in the way of negatives about them, also. Resource hogs, I believe. So I was hoping to hear from those with some personal experience with either program.
FWIW, I'm running a home office PC, Dell Dimension 4600, P4 3GHz, 2MB RAM.
Thanks.

Uhh you don't really have to worry about resources with system specs like that... But Norton has made huge improvements in resource usage. (At least with the corporate edition issued by universities)

Kaspersky has the highest detection rate of any antivirus product, period. (see links in my sig for links to detection rate tests).

another vote for Kaspersky...

I use a 2.4 P4 with 1.5gb ram, and have never even noticed a problem with it's usage, so you'll be fine

I'm using grisofts AVG, I really dislike Norton, back in 2004, it was THE resource hog, never ever will I install it again.

Anyone use Panda? Just installed it instead of upgrading to NIS 2006 and was wondering if it is any good? Seems like a pretty slick program but don't know how well it will hold up.

I use a good F/W and (un)common sense. In the last 10 years, I have had one virus (and I fixed that problem by ditching the preview pane in OE)

I've used Panda and Kaspersky and they are both excellent. Now switched to AVG because it is free and also really good. I had a problem with norton in the past that messed up my harddrive (the problem was with my specific harddrive but Norton was what triggered it) and I lost everything on there. And all of these are better at updating than Norton and offer better protection overall.

I installed Kaspersky's trial version earlier today. So far, I must say I like it. It is more intuitive than I recall from a previous version. And the reviews all say it is the best at weeding out all the damn virii that are after me. Maybe I'll visit some porn sites and see how it reacts . . .

I have Kaspersky too, just setup the automatic updates for late-early a.m. hours when you're sleeping. I couldn't be happier. I bought the download version & got 2 years for $50 from their website.

Norton doesn't give me any problems. Right now I am running NAV 2005
Also use AntiVir..very low with system resource and better detection rate.

Poll would be useful, and after many many years of experience with norton and their quality degrading severely over time (Hey, sounds like dell! ) I have to say, kaspersky is the best. Although I do have some issue with kaspersky as when I'm defragging, I'm forced to disable it (although I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not) and large file searches can be slow with it enabled or for example if you've searched for a file and tons were listed and you scroll through the list, it will move slowly because kaspersky is scanning each file.

But Overall kaspersky at least DETECTS the god'damn viruses unlike norton. I've had kaspersky installed for several months now and have been virus free (and I know this because the system is stable and runs as quickly as the day I did a fresh install).

The only issue I've had with Kaspersky is the amount of data it logs. My HD is writing all the time and I finally tracked it down to Kaspersky.
