I think it was the political anger at the hyper partisan climate we're dealing with today and possibly a bone tossed to his partisan supporters. As far as helping his credibility it was a benefit for those in his camp and a negative for those that oppose him. Basically it was a wash.

When all this first came out, Kavanaugh should have set aside personal ambition, declared his innocence & withdrawn. He could have sacrificed that ambition for the good of the Country & he could frame it in a way to make himself look good.
