Feinstein fucked up pretty bad here. She had no right to unilaterally withhold this information from the committee.
Edit: and the Rs seem to have done her one better now releasing a letter from 65 women who attended his HS who claim he "behaved honorably and treated women with respect". This signals they knew about the allegations.
That really doesn't mean much. "He rarely tries to rape" is as about as comforting as a letter from Roy Moore's friends saying "well he never tried to bang my 14yo, so IDK what the fuss is about."
As far her tactics... Yeah, IDK either. Clearly there were fellow Ds that were not happy with her approach on the nomination, but she was the lead.
Clearly just asking to delay the vote, followed by bickering over process was unlikely to change the course. Why keep it hidden until now? Did she think it would stay hidden, and that was the proper thing to do?
Otoh, maybe this person really didn't want to become the next Anita Hill, and Fienstein was trying to avoid that if possible. How did she consider the optics when this became public so late in the process? This doesn't actually serve the woman's interest introduced like this.
Lordy.
