WH, including Trump, response is so muted as to be rendered suspicious.

Either there are going to be more problems and they don't want to be on the limb when it's sawed off or somebody (perhaps somebodies) prevailed on him to mostly stand pat for now.

Anything that makes Trump look like a "loser" will not be tolerated by the White House. While I'm sure GOP Congress would be happy to pick any alternative Heritage/Federalist approved judge, Trump is personally invested in Kavanaugh and will not let it go. He wants his pick to win.

That is definitely one reason, and one reason Trump has his approval ratings on the 30s. I'm guessing knowingly putting an accused rapist on the court for a lifetime appointment will not improve this situation.

Every R is going to have to go on record as voting for a rapist. Like they don't have enough midterm troubles already.

A not so stupid politician would move on. W at least figured that out quickly.

A smart pol would have made a better pick first time.

Even at that, I assume they have a stable of them waiting for their chance.

I'm wondering, out of that pool, why him?

A. Did they not vet him well? (yet they seem prepared for this coming up...)

B. They knew, but:
1. Not care? (have some overriding reason)
2. Not appreciate the backlash? (poor judgement)

Early signs point to B, but what was the thought process? We seem left with either incompetence or conspiracy.

Kavanaugh is plan A. I'm sure they have plans B. C, D & so forth but he's apparently their pick of the litter.

I really don't like this sexual imbroglio coming out. It lets the GOP paint him as the victim & isn't the kind of thing that can really be proven. There are plenty of other reasons for him to be rejected, mostly the GOP trying to pass him off as somebody he's not. The GOP is trying to establish a right wing rear guard fortress in the SCOTUS to protect the power of Wealth & to sustain the top down class warfare they've waged against the rest of America from Reagan forward. It's a form of looting.

When did she first report this? Sounds like years ago. Amazingly premonitious of her to discuss this with others years before he was nominated to the SC.

Makes sense why Rs had a "supported by 65 women" letter in their back pocket. They knew of it too, nominated him anyway, and prepared to bulldozer the nomination over any opposition.

Question is why?

Why choose this guy with this baggage? Why have to hide so many documents? Why accept his continual lies to Congress? So many questions need to be answered.
Listening to Mitch McConnell bitch about the Dems operating outside the norms of the process. Pot meet kettle.

Republicans knew about possible sexual assault with this guy. How else could you have a letter signed by 65 women vouching for his character back in high school when he went to an all boys high school?

Hearing McConnell speak doesn't sound like he wants there to be hearings. I don't know if that's going to fly politically.

Seems Brett's pal who now says Ford's claim is "absolutely nuts" wrote something completely different twenty years ago.

Kavanaugh High School Pal Writes In Memoir Of Being Wild Drunk With Girls

Brett Kavanaugh’s former high school pal who a woman says was in the room when the now-Supreme Court nominee sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers called the accusation “absolutely nuts.”

But Mark Judge, now a writer and filmmaker, wrote in his memoir two decades ago that he spent some of his high school years “completely annihilated” on alcohol and trying to “hook up” with girls.

Judge, a classmate of Kavanaugh’s at the all-male Georgetown Prep the time of the alleged assault, tells stories in his 1997 memoir, Wasted: Tales of a GenX Drunk, of getting drunk his first time at age 14, binge drinking at teen parties and a struggle with alcoholism.

His “immersion” into alcohol began the end of his sophomore year during a typical annual “beach week,” when Catholic high school students headed to the shore after school was out. “Now I had an opportunity to make some headway [with girls]. Most of the time everyone, including the girls, was drunk. If you could breathe and walk at the same time, you could hook up,” he wrote.

His drinking became so extreme that he had blackout episodes, and woke up on the floor of a restaurant bathroom with no memory of how he got there. Once “I had the first beer, I found it impossible to stop until I was completely annihilated,” he wrote.

There is a reasonable chance he didn't remember what happened in that room on the night in question.

He said, she said.
Naturally, she is unhinged, wrong, a lowlife, a trouble maker, a "B", and a lier.
And Kavanaugh...?
Pure as snow, infallible, privileged, a male, educated, moral, just a nice guy.
And so it goes.....
Funny how the MEN in congress always believe the MEN, and the WOMEN in congress rather know the truth.
So this is why we need more women in government.

And take note....
If this lady accuser is unhinged, wrong, a lowlife, a trouble maker, a "B", the lier, then logic has it that so must be Diane Feinstein.
At least, that is how the male logic goes.
If the men believe this woman is nuts, then ALL WOMEN must be nuts.

Yes...I believe the woman.

And I believe Diane Feinstein simply waited because.....
#1, she wasn't sure what to do with this information,
and second, sure this was probably a delay tactic.
And is using this as a delay tactic really THAT BAD?
Look at the tactic Mitch McConnell used to deny Obama his justice pick.
Mitch made up new rules as to the nomination process on the fly.
We have a name for all of this,
DIRTY POLITICS!
This is just the same-o dirty politics crap.
They do it, we do it, that is when we can get away with it.

But I believe the woman.
And it's so typical for these types of men, the privileged in life, to get away with murder. Justice Thomas got away with it, the he said she said thing, and no doubt Kavanaugh will also get away with it.

So what do we end up with?
Extremely highly flawed individuals making our laws, setting our standards, dictating our morals, denying equalities to the deserving of society.
The process MUST BE CHANGED.
The process of how we chose Supreme Court justices AND this FOR LIFE crap MUST GO.
Justices on the high court must be term-limited, and the general citizenry i.e. the voters must also have a say in the matter using the ballot.

Supreme court justices must be term limited to no longer than 10 years, and the public must have the final approval via the ballot box.
A special national election.
Regardless of the cost for such elections, it needs to be done.
Especially now that republicans have figured out how to pervert the process.
Pervert the process by disallowing Obama his justice.
Republicans have broken the process, the constitution, so out with the old and in with an entirely new court process.

"Trump says Kavanaugh is 'one of the finest people' he's known..."

I'm not sure that's saying much.

Because Trump believes he'll block any subpoena of him.

Capito now says that Ford and Kavanaugh have to give public testimony. Kennedy says there will be a public hearing.

Grassley isn't going to get away with trying to do this on a call or in a closed proceeding.

Heard something on the news today I agreed with... The whole committee (Dems and Rs) should agree to allow an independent investigator to question both Kavanaugh and Ford in the open session. That might help prevent a political shit show. Not gonna happen, but wishful thinking.

In a sane world an impartial party would try to provide the senate with an objective evaluation of the merits of this claim.

We do not live in a sane world.

I'm already cringing at what the GOP questions are likely to be/sound like. Probably a huge mistake in retrospect not to put any women on the R side of the judiciary committee...

My inclination is to tell old accusations to !@#$ off. Particularly given the political implications, such things are FAR too important for political power in this nation. Think of the consequences. Delayed vote, he's rejected. New Congress, Dem controlled. No more Republican nominations for SCOTUS.

Now there may be a window in December to get one passed. But after Garland? Naw, this is it. Trump gets Kavanaugh or he gets no one.

Having said that, her making even vague accusations 6 years ago adds credence to the notion that her side of this (may) not be politically motivated. Or, even if it is... she still may be telling the truth, or at least her version of it. TL;DR, it adds some credibility. But where should that leads us?

What should we do with this story?

There are several options they could hustle through during the lame duck even if they lose the Senate. Yes, it's like the biggest admission possible on how full of shit the Republicans are to basically do the reverse Garland but they won't care about that.

The Republican senators (all male) will be walking through a political minefield. They could blow this whole thing out of the water if they take the boys will be boys approach, and attack the alleged victim. This will be very interesting.
