The question here is what kind of security are they willing to give you in your job. If you're out in the field by yourself with a truck, you're probably not safe in Afganistan or Iraq. Qatar would be a cake-walk.

I would do it, but wow, what a turn of events.

Best wishes with regard to whatever path you choose... btw, how was Mexico?

No, he's 22, which is why he thinks his life is so dramatic. When I was 22 I was like that, too. As you get older you learn how to avoid all the drama. It's part of growing up.

Qatar is actually pretty decent. I did a total of 240 days there over the span of 2 years. If I had to pick one of the three locations that would be it. In Doha (Qatar) they've got shopping centers and hotels that rival anything you'll find in a good sized US city to include, but not limited to Applebee's and McDonalds. In fact the place is somewhat westernized since it's a pretty big British vacation spot.

Of course I'm speaking of and only of Doha (is there anything else there...really? No).

That's not to say you don't need to watch your back at all times there. YOU DO! And if you do go to Qatar, stay OUT of the Souics (SP?). Hell, they've even got a Ferrari dealership there.

This is a tourist site which, of course want's to sell you a travel package so take it with a grain of salt, but it has a few pictures of Doha, Qatar.

Personally, I'd do it. But that's because I have no attachments to this country besides my siblings and parents.

I wouldn't do it; the beheading thing freaks me out even more than the South America kidnapping thing. I agree though the chances are pretty small.

2. I told KBR that money wasn't a compelling factor but that I cared more about location and flexability. The headerhunter balked at me and said he thought I was a go-getter and he didn't have time for bullsh!t. At that point I basically realized money isn't worth leaving family and friends -- even for a year. Sure, it would be exciting and fun, but I'm sure that would wane after time.
3. Anyone wanting to talk to KBR go to KBRjobs.com.
4. My family did NOT want me to go. My mother was pissed beyond belief and my Grandmother basically said she'd go crazy.
5. I love my dogs.
6. I entertain ideas and got some great advice and thoughts from this thread.
7. I'm not crazy, I'm just having a midlife crisis at 22.
8. I'm still going to Oklahoma tommorrow.
9. Thanks to everyone who replied, I hate that I had to decline the offer but I only had to 4pm to decide. After talking to the GM and my boss (who I'm close friends with) I decided to go back. My boss told me to take the "fvcking job" and that I'd be crazy to come back and work for him, but I decided money simply isn't that important.

RE: Mexico Yeah, I just got back but I trapped in Houston due to Continental and Customs. I had a great time, I had a freaking Mercedes SLK for 5 days, drank my ass off, met a great girl, went to the ghetto and had the best taco ever, etc. I had a badass trip, but Cancun is WAYYYYYYYY too much of a tourist place. I really liked Mexico but I don't think I'm gonna move there. If I did it would be somewhere like Tulum or Playa Del Carmen but not Cancun. Anyway, I'm gonna go have a drink at the bar and find some way to charge my phone. Thanks AT for your help and advice.

Glad to hear this. The last thing I want to see is another RIP thread of a fellow Member, especially if it has to do with that sh1thole Iraq.

One of our medics went to Iraq about 4 months ago on the same deal, just working as a paramedic. Anyways, he's back for 2-3 weeks leave b/c he was shot at and the bullet grazed his cheek. No major injury, but definitly a close call. As of last week, he said he was going back. So there you go. Risks are there, but that's a nice chunck of change. If I were single, I would go.....I think..

It's great that he sets such a low value for his life.

One of my cousins just got back from working for KBR over there. He was in some shiz hole up north of Tikrit. He said it wasn't that bad if you don't mind being shot at on an hourly basis or having mortars lobbed at you nightly.

No, he's 22, which is why he thinks his life is so dramatic.

I don't think my life is dramatic, it is just my life. I post on AT about it occasionally for advice and/or discussion. Deal with it. You should have the self control to not click a topic written by me if it bothers you.

When I was 22 I was like that, too. As you get older you learn how to avoid all the drama. It's part of growing up.

No, I'm pretty sure you weren't anything like me at 22, not at least according to your behavior on this forum. I am grown up, so sorry that you feel sometimes people don't just need to clear their head and talk about life. That's part of the reason many people post on forums.

You don't know me, you don't know my situation, and you don't know me in real life. Several people in this thread do, and my life is exactly how it is. All my friends know that if something insane is going to happen it will happen to me. Just my luck I guess. Perhaps you aren't really trying to be a jerk, and if not then cool. I post on AT about my life and talk to my friends about it. I think about life a lot -- I'm a heavy thinker and a very verbal person, so I have to have an outlet.

I sent a few consulting firms my resume a while back and received some calls. They all wanted me to have security clearance though (secret / top secret) and didn't want to sponsor people for the clearance. Apparently, that's a fairly common problem ad there is apprently a lot of lobbying and some folks in congress are pressing for easier/quicker security clearances. I'm not about to join the military to get my clearance, so unless they get really desperate, I guess it won't be happening for me.

BTW, the jobs they offered me were paying between $120k - $300k, tax free.

It's great that you don't realize people are different than yourself.

There was a food service guy there that was making 80k just being a cook in a kitchen, so I can imagine what they pay if you have a really nice skill set. I guess mine was on the lower end.

Life is one big risk.

I cant say for sure if I would go if offered the money, but one thing is for damn sure I would pick myself up a good rifle and pistol for self defense if I got in country.

I turned down a similar offer (noc admin position) in GTMO last year. The reason? It was an 18 month unaccompanied tour after which time I'd go stateside to any military installation I choose. Now, I got out of the Navy to avoid longterm family separation. 18 months is a long time to be away from your loved ones.
