KDE 3.0 released

Seems like there's been a stealth release of KDE3.
No mention on kde.org yet, but packages for a load of distros is available on KDE's ftp server, dont know about the mirrors yet.

No source though, kinda odd, but I guess it's still in the packaging process.

Now lets see those Debian packages

Once you get used to the comfort that is deb/APT, compiling just doesn't do it anymore.

Just got back from looking.
The Mandy RPM folders are up but empty.
Sunner must have found it as they were loading up the mirrors.

Strange, Mandrake RPM's were up when I looked, and they're up at ftp.sunet.se now if you wanna get them.

i got all of the rpms from the ftp.sunet.se and when i try installing kdebase it says that i need a billion other things.. how do you guys install it? is there a specific order that i need to install?

Downloaded and installed it this morning, and so far i have to say i love it! One question though, does anybody know to compile Keramik from cvs? I downloaded everything in it's directory and now have not the fogiest idea.

Anyways, KDE 3 is very nice, closing in on the fit and finish of Windows.

I hardly ever compile from source anymore, and definitely not for system-critical packages.

It takes too much effort to properly integrate a tarball release into a commercial Linux distro, and then I'd still have to test it thoroughly.

It's easier to let the distros handle this for us. Since Linux is pretty mature as a desktop OS, I'm pretty comfortable with not having the latest and greatest right away. In fact, it's probably better to wait for the first .01 release anyway.

APT is Debian's package manager.

Once configured, you could just install KDE, including dependancies by just typing apt-get install kde, a tad more conviniant than going through the process of installing loads of RPM's to satisfy dependancies, no?
