KDE 3 Problems...

Alright, this is on a pretty fresh install of Mandrake 8.2 (yeah, yeah, it picked up my Promise ATA100 controller without a hitch). I installed KDE3 exactly as mandrake.com says after downloading all the rpms. Well things seem to work, until I try to move an app from one desktop to another.

For example, I usually keep one desktop open just for apps that I am currently using. Seems normal. Well then I pop over apps that are running but I don't need the screen to various desktops. Let's say Folding at Home. I open a console window, load it up, then try to move it to desktop 2. Well the computer stays running along with the processes, but now I can't use the menu bar at the bottom to switch desktops. Basically, it freezes the menu bars, and I need to reboot in order for them to work again? Any ideas?

BTW - I'm thinking of jumping to something else besides mandrake, but it installed so easy

Click on the terminal icon on the panel and go to Preferences >> Execute >> and where it says Command delete the noxft part of the command ( leaving the rest intact ) and then start up a terminal once or twice and see if that works to solve your problem.

Mandrake and RedHat will seem "easy" to you; they are the most user-friendly Linii on the market today. The only other distros worth mentioning are Slackware which is slowly dying but is notable because it is the only *BSD-style Linux, and Debian which is incredibly advanced. It is also extremely difficult to install. I have a CD set from CheapBytes of 2.2 (Woody, I think) and still can't get it installed correctly. Mind you, I've been using Linux for 3+ years now and am a fairly advanced user. I think Debian is more benificial to users on fat pipes that don't need install CDs...

Slackware is so cool, even if you don't use it for long you should still get a copy and check it out. Things will become so much clearer because of the simplicity of how slackware works. There is no RPMs in Slack; you just install the tarballs. Instead of SysV init, which is the rc.d/rc3.d/S91local lingo, slackware uses BSD style init, which is daemon httpd start. AFAIK, Slack is the only major distro that follows BSD fairly closely.

well i use slackware 3 years now... I used to have redhat before but it was difficult to configure

I mean redhat does it all by itself... you just look it.... ( it sucks 4 me).

I like slackware cause its easy to configure although you have to configure it manually but thats the good thing. You do everything by yourself and you know what you are doing ..

however I have problems with my hp720 + winTV pci... never managed to configure them ..so I have to keep a win2k version running in my box too

I wait 4 slackware 8.1 to make a new try with my TV and printer....

BTW anyone manage to configure a hauppage wintv and a hp deskjet printer with slack ?

say yes to give me hope for a better tommorow without win32..

Northern Love is the man....worked like a charm. I'm not sure how I feel about KDE yet, since I've been messing around with CDE on my sparc, and normally window maker...I'm sure once I customize it, I'll like it a bit more..

Is this what you're talking about? Fuond it on Mandrake's site.

"KDE 2.2.2 and KDE 3.0 have conflicting menu entries for Konsole. When Konsole is launched from kicker (the panel), kicker freezes until konsole is being closed. To workaround this, remove the Konsole button from kicker, and create manually an icon on the desktop which launches konsole. "

That fixes the problem. lilcam gave more info on the nature of the problem, but where can I find more documentation about it?

Also, I haven't played with KDE3 much (only within a VMware session) but I get ghosting of icons on the Desktop. By ghosting, I mean the icons disappear until I roll the mouse over them.

I've never been a fan of the default KDE aesthetics, but I'd like to switch my desktop to KDE3 if it's stable and aesthetic enough (through theming). I probably should wait until 3.0.1 before making a final decision.

KDE3 is the best Desktop so far. With Mosfet Luquid, Connectiva Icons and thems from http://themes.kde.org KDE is much more appealing than windows.
As for stability, ease of use and features - Windows is far behind (as usual).
