KDE is huge. I tried compiling it once and it took something like 3 days. I couldnt compile all the parts at once though, so that probably had something to do with it.

I built KDE on FreeBSD the other day and while I didn't gauge the actual time, it was less than 7 hours (for that is how much sleep I got that night ). This was on a Duron 700. Once KDE3 hits FreeBSD's ports, I'm prolly going to build as well. If anyone is interested in my results, let me know.

I was doing this on an Athlon 550, and compiling the next part was always interrupted by something (work and sleep). So I dont know how much time it actually took, but 7 hours is a long time for something like that. Glad I dont use it

Granted it is a long time, however I was doing a speed comparison between the i386-compiled Slack packages and built from source. KDE was *ALOT* faster built from source. Plus ports just works so much nicer/seamlessly than Slackware build scripts.

Has anyone started using KDE3 yet? Not the beta but the stable release? I am curious because I decided after all my problems with the rpms that I would just wait till one of the distros release a new revision later this month with KDE3. I'll just continue using what I have, which by the way is awsome. I haven't used Linux in a long time but things have come a long way the last couple years. Now if only the upgrades were a little easier or I knew a little more(prolly a mixture of both) I could dump M$ at home. My boss just laughs at me when I tell him we should switch over to linux, perhaps one day that will not be the case.

Well, I JUST got finished compiling everything (posting from Konqueror 3 now). So far it looks nice but I haven't used it enough to give a good opinion.

I do too, but the yellow RX-8 makes for a good wallpaper. I think I like the look of the 350Z better than either though (they don't have any wallpapers of it that I liked hence it's absence from my desktop). I'm considering getting a 350z after getting my degree (should be in ~1 year), but until then I'm stuck with a Mustang (got it after I wrecked my Camaro last November. word of advice: if you have a choice between a Mustang and a Camaro, get the Camaro. I frickin hate this car).

looks nice, except for konqueror (i've always thought konq's button icons look horrid ) very smooth though.

How do you like font anti-aliasing in KDE3? The screenshots don't really convey whether they're better or not.

BigBongWongFooey: If you install the KDEartwork package then you get several different icon themes available (Slick looks really nice in Konqueror, but I don't like it in my general KDE environment which is why I'm using iKons).

manly: I don't have antialiasing on. The shot looks kinda blurry b/c of the jpeg compression (saved it in a hurry w/o checking any options).

KDE 3 is great... if you have problems installing from rpms try the -nodeps and --force switches. The anti-alias fonts look nice too

There are a few instances where you should override the package management system.

I don't feel that installation of KDE3 is one of them, and I don't agree that it should be stated as advice.

But if that's how you like to do it, more power to you. How well do PSX games play btw?

I realize you have to be very careful when overriding the package management system. If you have a pretty powerful system give ePSXe a try. It runs a lot of games.. I would guess its compatiblilty rate is around 80%.

Just installed KDE3 under my Mandrake 8.2 test container. I expected it to be a separate option within kdm, but apparently it completely overrides the KDE2 installation. You can pick and choose only if you start up KDE from a console I think.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to install the Mosfet Liquid theme. It appears I have to build it from source, but I haven't found any instructions (in the tarball or the web site).

Any pointers?

i'm trying out gentoo linux right now... apparently the kde3 ports are out for that so i'm hoping to have a speedy kde setup after about 2 days of downloading and compiling and general setup.

anybody else using gentoo? www.gentoo.org

I use Gentoo, and I found the upgrade to kde3 to be pretty painless. I'll try to post some pics when I get home tonight. I love the portage system It lets me kill my system with a single emerge update --world

O.K. Here's mine complete with Mosfet's Liquid Theme, but I just installed last night, so I haven't done much to customize it

my desktop should be about 106 K now.
