gnome?

no one can really tell you, try both and see what you like

i tried gnome, didnt like it much, kde is more windows-ish, and slicker looking IMO, but it looks to cartoony to me. i like the way gnome apps look better, and thats why in general i use gnome apps, although i dont use gnome.

iceWM is a window manager whereas gnome and kde are desktop environments, so you cant really compare them. you could use gnome or kde with icewm.

KDE is much more refined IMO than GNOME, although Ximian is doing a good job refining gnome pretty well, but KDE rocks

I use gnome with sawfish, but would like to use gnome with enlightenment. How do I do that?

EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out.

Here is a screenshot of my current desktop.

install E, and then somewhere in the gnome control center you can add a WM and switch to it.

Thanks bingbong, I found it in the control panel under "windows managers". Seems fairly obvious now.

I used to use KDE, I think it's a much more mature and well structured environment than Gnome.

I've converted to XFce these days though, reminds alot about CDE.

In my experience, KDE is faster. I have have used both many times. I think that Gnome is getting faster from version to version, but I think that KDE is still faster. Gnome seems to be more for the inexperienced Linux user, I think it focuses more on a nice GUI then a functional one.

BlvdKing I noticed you have a shortcut to THE SIMS on your desktop. Is that game for Linux or is it run under wine?

BTW, I use KDE and this skin

I prefer KDE. It's prettier and more refined so it suits me more for general desktop use (browsing and whatnot). I mix all the apps though. I use Pan and Gaim (both GTK/Gnome apps) for news and IM but then Konq, Pixie and Kmail for web, image management and email, repectively. Just pick whatever environment you use and find your apps. It'll work out.

If you want a lightweight interface though grab Windowmaker. It's still slick looking and doesn't take up much resources, and you can still run KDE and/or Gnome apps fine. I use it when I'm coding since a full blown DE gets in the way.

I like the way Gnome looks, but I use KDE. Gnome was just super slow on my computer, and KDE runs pretty well, so that made my decision for me.

<< Do you know how can I view PDF files in Red Hat 7.1(KDEor GNOME) >>

Adobe has a version of its reader that runs on Linux systems. There are also third
party utilities that can do that, but I have found that those don't work as well as
the official program.

So funny, I am in the process of installing RedHat, and was just about to ask the same question. I guess the consensus is KDE. I'm trying to out right now....

KDE is my desktop of choice on my Redhat Linux system. I tried GNOME a while back and didn't like it, but all people have different tastes, so install both and try them to see which you prefer better.

You might find that you like WindowMaker or BlackBox just as well. Both of those are powerful, light, and easy to configure.

Also you should check out http://apps.kde.com for downloads. KOffice is pretty tight, esp. KSpread. But remember that these and all other apps can run under any windowmanager.

i encourage you all to also try going without KDE or gnome. try using just a window manager like blackbox (my favorite) or even iceWM or hey, even E, you'll never know until you try, and especially on a debian system, you can use gnome/gtk apps AND kde/QT apps without installing either because it (apt) will grab all of the necessary libraries for you.

EmperorRob,
That is The SiMS for Linux using Transgaming's winex portability layer. Here is a link to that. It comes with Mandrake 8.1 gamers edition. I have quite a few games installed. Tribes 2, Starcraft Broodwar, Quake3/Team Arena and UT as well as the usual opensource games like Tuxracer and GLTron.

I used to have KDE installed but it started to wig out on my machine, so I uninstalled it. I have tried them all (I used twm for a couple of days out of necessity) and settled down with Gnome/Sawfish. Yesterday I changed it to Gnome/enlightenment and now my desktop feels right at home. I like how customizable Gnome is.
