So in the future I'm probably going to be getting a PS3 and will most likely be removing my old PS2/HD-DVD player from the entertainment center to make room for it.

Are most people holding on to their PS2 or trying to sell it to offset the cost of the PS3? I don't think I would play with it too much if I have the PS3 (it's just collecting dust as it is now), but I could consider putting it in another room with a TV for when my wife's nephew/niece come over.

Let me install FMCB on that memory card with a few apps and you'll never want to give up your PS2. I didn't even buy mine until AFTER my 60GB PS3 (from the US launch with full PS2 BC). The PS3 doesn't support FMCB...

You wouldn't get more then 40 bucks for it, you might as well keep it imo, especially if you plan on playing old games and don't get a backwards compatible PS3.

If you get a PS3 with BC, then you probably don't need it. Personally, I saved $100 buy buying a PS3 without BC and just kept my PS2. I moved it to my computer room and have it hooked up to my monitor and computer speakers. It's even better that way, because I can play console games even when my wife is hording the TV. I will admit that I haven't played it since buying the PS3, but I need to play through Final Fantasy X-2 before get FF12, so that gives me some incentive .

Edit: Also, console-gaming questions might be better directed to--wait for it, wait for it--the console-gaming forum.

sell. I sold my SNES, DreamCast, N64, GBA, PSP, PS2, and all my games and accessories in exchange for a 360.

Best video game decision I've ever made.

If you do decide to sell it, make sure the buyer knows that it is customary to tip someone for selling you used electronics.

The PS3 Slim has only _PS1_ backwards compatibility so if you have PS2 games you still want to play you need the PS2.

I still have Persona 3, Ico, FF X, Front Mission 4 and more in my unplayed stack and still need to pick up Persona 4, Odin Sphere and a few more. Good games are good games even if they're only in 480i.

FMCB = "Free Memory Card Boot"
The "Free" part means that you are supposed to use your FMCB memory card to spread and install it for other people and you can't get away with charging for it due to a nice little banner when it boots.

It's a homebrew software launcher that uses a more modern memory card exploit that works on all PS2s up to those sold in Spring 2009 and later. Unlike the Independence exploit (a less modern MC exploit), it doesn't just work on some old fat PS2s.

Alone, it doesn't really do much, but pair it with the right apps and you have a monster. It's TIGHTLY integrated with some apps, like the DVD game backup-booting program "ESR" (FMCB detects the backup and you never have to launch ESR). If you have a fat PS2 and a network/HDD adapter, you can put HD Loader on the memory card and run all your games from the HDD (VERY useful if your PS2 can't read discs anymore... just install to the HDD using a PC or FTP and run it from there). SMS media player lets it play more USB thumbdrive media in HD than my PS3!

Actually that might be a good reason right there for me to buy a PS3 slim.

I have a PS2 slim right now and the only game left for me to play is Castlevania Symphony of the Night. But it doesnt work right. It stutters and hiccups and outright freezes. Apparantly backward compatibility isnt all that hot.

Hmm, I still have my PS2 w/ network adapter... I've been trying to figure out what fun stuff I can do with it. The laser is a bit lazy, so running remote media is what I had been hoping to do.

Edit - just looked at http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/index.php and this is just what I've been looking for! I don't know how I didn't come across this earlier. I had been looking at ways to install Linux on a PS2 to get what I was looking for, but never saw anything about FMCB...thanks for posting this as I can now dust off the PS2 in my closet and put it to good use again!

i keep all my old gaming systems.... i'm kinda nostalgic like that. the value of keeping it is more to me than the measly amount i would get for selling it.

i actually bought my PS2 from someone here on FS/FT. it served me well!

now i have a PS3

Glad to help. FWIW, installing remotely is more trouble than it's worth. It makes more sense to grab a USB-IDE converter and install from a PC with WinHIIP. If anyone needs an FMCB install, hit me up.

I know the feeling. I would wager that my collection is vastly more extensive than anyone else on these forums...

...and I don't just mean the "mainstream" Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, etc either: I've got Philips CD-i, Panasonic R.E.A.L. 3DO, Nintendo Virtual Boy, Nintendo Super Famicom with Satellaview, Sega Power Base Converter, NEC Turbo Duo, and LOTS more.

I kept my PS2 and we still use it a LOT.

I have the PS3 on the big tv (65 inch DLP). i put the PS2 in the office/kids playroom on the 37 inch lcd. I end up playing the PS2 far more then the ps3. We also have a bunch of kids games for it.

hmm come to think of it i still have my PS1 in teh closet. Gave away my Dreamcast (and regret it now) and wish my Super Nintendo still worked. i had been playing final fantasy 6 for years until the system died.
