i just got a new canon iP3000. i don't like the idea of wasting ink each time i switch it on, so i leave it on all the time. i have it for a few days only though. i also intend to turn it off and on if i do not use it for about two weeks, so as to prevent the ink from dry up.

will there be any damage to a printer that is always on?

It is generally recommended to print at least 1 page a week for injets, so the nozzels don't clog etc. Other than lightning strikes it won't hurt to leave on.

My HP 932 sat in closet for 2 years, with an empty color and full black cartridriges in it. Then it was shipped across CONUS, and it still works. Take that for what its worth.

No, it's OK. Modern printers go to sleep just like PCs, and wake up when your PC starts to send a job.

do you mean that it is sleeping even when the power led shows that it's powered? or do you mean by the auto shutdown feature? if you mean the auto shutdown feature, i did not enable it, else it will defeat the purpose of keeping it on all the time so as to keep it from wasting ink each time i turn it on again.

My printer has never been off except power failures or moving of the printer itself.

no problems.

I simply hate the noise. Maybe ink jet printers are more quiet? This HP LaserJet 4MV makes a bit of an electrical humming sound, even when it's "sleeping". Lucky it has an off switch, unlike your 1200?

I always thought that the general rule, when deciding whether to leave a piece of electrical equipment on, is whether or not it has moving parts that can wear out. That would include a printer, but I suppose when it goes to sleep, the moving parts come to a halt anyway.

It's a little different with inkjets because they typically do a cleaning cycle (or more like wasting-ink-cycle-so-you-can-buy-cartridges routine) every time you flick the switch on. With certain printers, the price of ink is ridiculous so keeping the power on for that reason alone is enough to warrant it.

I leave my inkjet on all the time, but shut my laserjet off at night to save power. those things suck more juice than a CRT

Hi, Most Ink Jet Printer should be left plugged in to a live outlet at all times. It usually makes no real difference if you turn it off a the power switch. Jim

I leave all my printers off, an HP 2100M, an Epson 1280 and an HP 882. Why? Because I barely print much. And its all USB so if I need to print I just turn it on. I do need to vacuum the Epson 1280 tho, thing is coated in dust.

I was under the impression that the print head isn't truly parked and capped (to prevent drying) while the power is on so I always turn the power off when I'm done for the day and turn it on again with the first printing of the next day. The ink for my Canon iP3000 is cheap ($12. shipped for a set of 4 tanks) - so I don't worry about it. IAC, the OE set of tanks lasted about 4 months with turning it off/on about once every day - can't break me at that rate...
. My old Xerox didn't have a power switch and if you didn't use it for a certain amount of time, it would automatically do a maintenance routine - could be disconcerting if located in your bedroom and the maintenance routine kicked in while I was sleeping. So I put it on a power strip so I could switch it off.

It all depends on how you use the printer. I have two - a Laserjet 4000 and an inkjet. Both stay off for most of the time because I only print something maybe once a day - and color - once a week.

But - it won't hurt them to be on.

How high will the electric bill be leaving that printer on 24/7? Do they not take up that much juice if left idle? Is it similar to leaving the monitor on in sleep mode?

No, those are compatible ink tanks from USAInkjet on eBay. A set of four OEM tanks is going to cost over $30. easy.
