Kenny Rogers Cheating?

I just saw on ESPN that Kenny Rogers had some kind of "substance" on his pitching hand. People speculate it may be pine tar for better grip. Kenny said "it was just dirt".

Personally, I think it WAS pine tar.

Thought?

From what I've heard on ESPN, the Umps took a look at it and said it was dirt. I'd trust them (especially them being WS caliber) over what a bunch of people are speculating.

The problem is, nobody actually inspected Rogers' hand. According to Palermo, the umpires "observed" the substance as dirt. Observing isn't the same thing as inspecting, but Palermo dismissed the difference. The umpiring crew, he said, could certainly tell the difference between dirt and, say, pine tar.

he has had the same stuff on his hand in his every post season appearance and the opposing team has failed to request a formal investigation so it's their own fault.

cupple that with the fact that players say as many as 60% of all pitchers use pine tar at some point or another & that his pitching improved after he removed it, I really doubt he was doing anything to "cheat"

I don't like baseball but i thought it was odd when he said he didn't notice it...seems like a pitcher would almost have to notice something like that.

Pine tar isn't used to put more moves on the ball. It is used for cold dry nights when the pitcher can't keep a grip of the ball as well. I'm not defending him if he was cheating, but it's not as bad as Vasoline.

Also, I think the umpires handled it well. (By telling him to take it off and we'll just say it was dirt.)

Did you watch the game?

Considering it was washed off before the 2nd inning, and he went on to pitch 7 more shutout innings, I'd say regardless of what it was, it didn't matter.

From the pictures it sure looks like pine tar or something, it doesn't look like just some 'dirt'. We'll see the next time he goes on the mound how he does without the pine tar

If he washed it off, whats the residue you can clearly see? If it was pine tar it would still give him an advantage as opposed to nothing.

I didn't watch the game, only caught what I could from ESPN.

In addition, even IF it was pine tar, after handling a dirty ball a few times, the pine tar would most likely be ineffective at that point. The pine tar would be covered with dirt and have no tackiness at all. Unless he washes his hands every damn inning in the dugout and applies fresh pine tar.

I used to help my stepfather in the logging industry back when I was a young teenager. After pine tar has been on your hands a while, it is very hard to wash off. It doesn't just come off with soap and water.
