BS

Well that could be an excuse but I believe this is the 3rd time that brown mark was spotted on his hand at the same spot.

Fact: The announcers were INSANELY biased to the Cardinals (no-it's not like they have any personal allegiances to that team, lol...), and blew it out of proportion from the start. Obviously, if LaRussa didn't care then it's not a big deal. That, and putting up 7 zeros on the scoreboard after he cleaned his hands showed that whatever it was didn't matter anyways.

Fact #2: The media HATES Kenny Rogers. Look at 2 weeks ago when that moron was jumping on his car to get an autograph, and he screamed at him... they immediately told the guy to press charges for assault, then the guy realized what a tool that would make him and dropped the charges. After Rogers knocked over that cameraman, he has been target #1 for every baseball media outlet in the world.

Fact #3: It's a 7-game series... Consider the first inning "karma payback" for all the crappy calls that went St. Louis' way in game #1. Just be thankful that Leyland warmed up Zumaya 3 different times before the 9th, so he couldn't close out the game. Rogers + Zumaya = Embarrasment to the cards. At least you had a chance with the rollercoaster on the mound.

On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, "Son, I've made my life out of readin' people's faces,
And knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
so if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice."

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

now Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

so when he'd finished speakin', he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

If your definition of "cleaned hands" is residue left over, then I guess your right.

Pine tar lasts two to three innings at best. So if it was pine tar, after washing off and just leaving residue, it would have been done by the end of the second inning. Thats why its usually relief pitchers and closers that get busted for it.

Even if it doesn't wash off, it's still diluted with soap and water and wouldn't be nearly as "effective".

I think they umps should have officially inspected his hand.

That said, I doubt that it had much effect after he washed, and it was definately done by the fourth, and he threw one hell of a game.

Still, Cards in 5!

They blow everything completely out of proportion...just fvcking report the scores, offer some analysis of the performance and upcoming games, etc. and stop trying to turn the hockey season into "the OC" on ice, the football season into "The TO beatdown show", and so forth.

So he had a dab/patch of something on his left hand below the thumb...whatever...he took it off after the first inning and actually pitched better the next several innings.

Same thing with ESPN reporting on Shawn Merriman's steriods suspension...he got suspended, end of story... ESPN doesn't even know the substance (just that it was "a real steriod"). But they can't stop there...they have to blow it up to a full blown commentary on the effect it will have on his career. Earth to ESPN...most every football player in the NFL has taken steriods at some point in their career. After his suspension is over, other players won't care... they all know how easy the tests are to beat and how flimsy the testing regimen truly is.

Oh, and ESPN... the part about how Merriman's positive test will take him out of the running for a place amongst NFL history's great LB with the likes of LT or Ray Lewis...man, that was just classic. Yeah, Shawn.... dude, you got kill somebody or do enough coke to kill a horse to make that list.

ESPN actually talks about the NHL. :Q That's news to me

Never heard of HGH, which is still not tested for in baseball? Not saying Pujols is on it or nothing, but that's the kind of stuff that improves eyesight and other things.

How is this relevant? Maybe he's just a poor cheater? If you were a teacher and a student cheated on a test and scored a 80% then later scored a 85% while not cheating, would you let him go for the first offense? I mean, if you improve, it couldn't be cheating right?

What about corked bats? People hit home runs with legal bats all the time, so therefore, corking your bat is legal?

I think he was suggesting that because Rogers pitched better after the substance was washed off, the substance was not helping him. In another words, he wasn't cheating.

That makes no sense whatsoever. You can cheat and not do better. Cheating doesnt always mean an increase in performance.

If you use a corked bat, and strike out, is that ok? Or is that still cheating? You didnt do any better than you would have with a regular bat so does that make it ok? It doesnt matter if it helped him, its still cheating.

This isnt nam, there are rules.

Doesn't anybody give a $hIt about the rules? MARK IT ZERO! Shomer Shabbos!

Well, I'll say this. If the brown stuff was dirt, then he had to have something else under it because I've never seen dirt stick to someones hand like that, especially not someone who moves a baseball all around with their hand while they're holding it. That dirt would have come off pretty dang quick if there was nothing else to it.

He's full of crap. It may not have been Tar, but it sure wasn't dirt.

Can it be tested for at all? I thought the whole thing about HGH was that you can't test for it. Anyway I didn't realize we are in an era of mccarthyism in baseball. Guilty until proven innocent... nice.

I can't believe we've gone this far in the thread and no one mentioned the movie, "Major League."
Rick Vaughn: What's that ****** on your chest?
Eddie Harris: [wiping his finger across his chest] Crisco.
Eddie Harris: [wiping it across his waist line] Bardol.
Eddie Harris: [wiping it along his head] Vagisil. Any one of them will give you another two to three inches drop on your curve ball. Of course if the umps are watching me real close I'll rub a little jalapeño up my nose, get it runnin', and if I need to load the ball up I just...
Eddie Harris: [wipes his nose] ...wipe my nose.
Rick Vaughn: You put snot on the ball?
Eddie Harris: I haven't got an arm like you, kid. I have to put anything on it I can find. Someday you will too.

Dirt + resin, which is legal MLB I believe, is a more likely explaination than pine tar.

Either way, he gave up one hit in the first, washed his hand, and then dominated the Cardinals for seven more innings.

Agreed, and why the balls would someone put tar on his hand when he has a huge glove on that no one can see the inside of?
