Let me just say, spend the 5 dollars more for the logitech or the basic microsoft optical... kensington is UTTER CRAP... first of all this is a true ergonomic nightmare, who ever designed this thing must have been a complete moron. 2nd, the drivers are pathetic, there are well noted problems of the wheel mouse. 3rd, on my p3-500 system, my computer would not even BOOT up to windows with the usb mouse plugged in... unplugged and it would boot. My brother tried it on his system and was able to get the mouse installed but the wheel functionality would constantly dissapear. I have a microsoft intellimouse optical on my main machine and its a dream come true. works perfect.

edit : I've had 2 previous usb kensington mouse in a box... they both broke within a 3 month period... the 2nd was a replacement for the first. I will never buy a kensington product again.

i don't know anything about usb verz, but the basic mouse-in-a-box is reliable. the ergonomics on it just stink tho--changed to belkin basic and it's not as reliable. logitech has some duds themselves just like microsoft and anybody else. and it DOES depends on the computer which mouse is a good match--my old k6-2 350 positively clowns with the basic logitech scroll mouse--won't even recognize it--whereas the newer cel 500 is smokin with it. i think optical is overrated. ymmv

Thanks for your comments about the Kensington mouse. I've never had a problem with my Logitech keyboard or mouse so I think I'll go with them.

Is Win 2K driver for this mouse out yet? Kensington is very slow on updating drivers.

stop whining about those drivers ... I have ME, and the only thing i did was to unplug my logitech trackball and plug the kensington mouse. I did not even had to reboot the stupid PC. Why all of you have to whine about drivers etc all the time? This company is slow .. another company is slow.. you do not even need a driver and you still whine about it ...
I also tried it at work on my Win95 - just unplug the old mouse, reboot the pc and you are all set .........

I have been using this mouse for about 2 weeks now, no problems at all, it's a great 5 button optical wheel mouse for the price. I've also had a Kensington wheel mouse previously and have used that for over a year with no problems. I'd recommend this mouse highly over the overpriced MS mouse. The drivers that come with it allow you to program all the buttons for different uses, I have the thumb button programmed to do a browser back and a ring finger/pinky button to do a browser forward, this is great for surfing to eliminate extra mouse movements. I have no problems with the wheel, it always works. I've also been able to set it up under Linux Mandrake 7.2 but haven't gotten the thumb button to work yet. By the way I'm using this as a PS/2 mouse, haven't tried the USB portion yet.

Wouldn't Window auto install the MS HID-complaint mouse driver?
Wouldn't it be good enough?

Seems like a good deal to me, although I am using ms optical, I didn't even bother to install its new driver.

My problem was... windows wouldnt even boot with it plugged in... and also yes the hid-compliant mouse driver works but scroll functionality on the optional buttons would not... also its so badly designed ergonomically that you'll get carpel tunnel sooner than normal... at least thats how i felt with my hand on it and so does many reviews on it.

Got this mouse as a Christmas gift. I already have a sweet mouse on my home PC so I took this to work. Been using it now for 3 weeks and it works fine. Only problem is no Win2k drivers right now, so I can only use it as regular scroll mouse on my machine. For $20, it looks great and performs well...I'd buy it. As always if it isn't M$ or Logitech most people are going to complain it's a piece of crap, that's to be expected.

Thanks for the good post, but I bought one earlier in the week for $19.95, along with the MS Pro Keyboard @ $34.95. The keybiard rocks, but the mouse worked like a POS on my Win 98 SE system. I returned it. It was especially poor for gaming.

MS Optical Explorer mouse is the best mouse I have ever owned. I shelled out 50 bones for it, and would gladly do it again. Now that Logitech has optical mice it has been tempting to grab one since I did own a MousMan before the Explorer. But I really like the 2 extra thumb buttons on the explorer, and don't thnk I could live with out them. Side note: When I was at OD yesterday looking for a few of the other items mentioned on here the Kensington mouse caught my eye because it looked like the explorer mouse except it has an extra thumb and pinky button opposed to the explorer with 2 extra thumb buttons, and the light in it is blue instead of red. Anyway I placed my hand on it and thought exactly what shurato said, "a true ergonomic nightmare". I guess the saying holds true, "you get what you pay for", at least in this scenerio.

Fry's has the exact same mouse (badged as Inland instead of Kensington) for $15. I have been using mine for about a week with no problems. My only complaint is that for on-line games, when you get to the end of your desk and have to pick the mouse up and move it back, it is kind of hard to pick up because of the rounded sides.

I bought this mouse a few months ago from NECX, but it had the name DEXXA on it. NECX had it labled as being manufactured by Logitech. The mouse works fine (PS2), but it would be easier to grasp if the sides were a little more rounded. If you need a scroll mouse for general use, don't want to have to clean the rollers and want five buttons, have small hands or don't want a mouse as big as Microsoft's, then this mouse should fit your needs.

One more thing...for a good set of drivers for this mouse, go to Microsoft.com and load the software for the "Intellimouse Optical USB". That driver actually lets you use all 5 buttons in games.

I checked out this mouse at OD, but none in stock. Don't know why...this Kensington is not worth your money. Ergonomics? NOT! Cheap knock-off. Logitech is better. I'm using MS Optical with thumb&pinky button and it ROCKS! Optical kicks and is so accurate! I know cause I play Counter-Strike and my scores have gotten better. No more gunky roller balls for me! MS, does make high quality products, although more expensive...but well worth it! Do you settle for cheap hardware? Then get the MS optical...you won't be disappointed!

shawnat don't quite understand your rant. You make it sound like the Kensington is not optical...it is. You also make it sound like it doesn't have a thumb and pinky button...it does. The Kensington I have seems quite accurate. Ergonomics is a matter of opinion, I talked my boss into the M$ Intellimouse Explorer. Thought I was toast when he said he was unhappy with how it felt in his hand and that he spent too much money for it to be like that...like I said, ergonomics is a matter of opinion.

For a cheap optical mouse, so far the Kensington has performed flawlessly for me. I'm happy.
