So I have a cold basement. The basement is unconditioned. I have my gaming machine down there and want to turn my furnace off when I have my 3 hr bioshock sessions. Anyway, I decide to get a kerorsene heater. You know the domed shaped ones. (exactly this one http://img.alibaba.com/photo/1...6/Kerosene_Heater.jpg) I find a good one barley used for $35.00 on craigslist. So I'm thinking, keorsene, it's an old fuel not really used anymore. It should be cheap, right???

I bought a blue 5 gal jug for wal-mart. I went to my supercenter so I was pretty far from my house. I went down the long road home where there's a lot of gas stations. No one had it except this one little gas station close to home. $4.39 a gallon!!!!!!!!!!

Kerosene = Diesel for the most part. There are some small diff. but not a lot in most areas.

That is why Kerosene has a dye in it to keep some from running it, untaxed, in their cars/trucks.

Well if it's "not really used anymore" then it won't benefit from economies of scale - since there's little demand for it, manufacturers don't get as much profit from going to the trouble of making just a little bit. Result: High cost to the consumer.

I keep a kerosene heater for emergency's. I use the "clean burn" fuel in it that cost even more than kerosene you get at Home Depot or Lowes. Since I rarely use it I dont want it to stink up the house when I do.

Meh, I still pay around $2 for premium gas while the lowest grade is around 30-40 cents cheaper .

I used to use Kerosene all the time....not anymore.

No matter what additives you put into it you will still get that smell and if the wick burns too low you will get that strong odor plus soot all over the ceiling.

make sure to change the wick at least every season just to be safe.

make sure that the safety mechanism works properly.

MAKE sure you have several carbon monoxide detectors both hard wired and battery operated.

whats the point of saving money on heating if you never wake up?

I switched from Kerosene to a portable propane heater like Mr. Heater

It can use either the small propane cylinders like for camping, or for a few buck more you can get a kit to adapt a large tank. Where I live if costs around 15 to fill a tank and it will last a week-2 weeks depending on the usage.

There is very little if any odor and it heats the room up fast with the small fan inside the unit.

I would use this over kerosene any time but that is just my opinion.

It is going to be much more widely available in the east where they have never bothered to set up a fuel distribution system. Kerosene, heating oil, and coal were all widely available when I lived in NY a few years ago. Head to the west or midwest and you will be lucky to find even one of those.

I don't know why the big difference in price. Where I live (north of Harrisburg PA) we have pricing from 4.24 to 2.53 in a twenty mile radius. Unfortunately this is my seconday heat source, wood is the primary. When oil got so expensive I quit using it.

Kerosene heater in the basement? Why not just build a campfire or light up your BBQ? If your basement is drafty enough to safely operate a kerosene heater, you'd be better off insulating.

Oil isn't that bad anymore...I just got 177 gallons @ $2.19/gallon.

Two of my coworkers got in on the budget plans and are locked in @ $4.75 or so... :\

There is a gas station hat sells kerosene near me for $1.50 a gallon. You need to shop around. RossMAN is going to hunt you down.
