I have been battling with weight problems since I was 24-25 after college. I went from 180 all the way up to 284 at my highest (currently 261, 35 year old male, 5'9" stocky build).

After seeing such great improvements from my coworkers using a ketogenic diet, I decided to do it myself. 3 weeks into it and I am just not a huge meat fan. Not a vegetarian, but I don't feel like I want to keep eating this way.

I am not interested in eating any processed foods. I love fruits, vegetables, and protein like chicken and nuts. However, the internet is just full of misinformation..he says she says kind of info. The keto people say that insulin response generated from carbs increase chance of inflammation, disease, cancer, etc.. and the carb people quote the dangers of low carb living (potential problems with kidney problems, lipidemia, etc)

Yes, I want to lose weight. It's okay if it takes me a year to do it. I just want to live the absolute healthiest I can. I want to eat to prevent disease, but I don't want to be super low carb and in nutritional ketosis to do it. I am still on 12.5mg of Atenolol (beta blocker) daily for heart palpitations that I would like to get off of as well (many say it causes weight gain..although not sure how much at only 12.5mg)

I am sorry for the rant.. does anyone have any suggestions.

I haven't done much research into it. I'm guessing it's probably extremely hard to abide by, and even harder to work out while doing this. I would probably never even try it.

I started the Carb Nite Solution about three weeks ago. Its a mix of ultra low-carb (30g a day) and a weekly carb intake of 6-8 hours for one night. So far its going OK. I haven't really lost much weight, but my pants are a little looser. I'm also in the middle of SS so perhaps that's why I haven't seen much weight loss.

Previous to this I was Paleo for 3+ years and plateaued at about 235ish lbs (6'3'"). I'm hoping to reduce my fat rather than lose weight.

Your struggles sound similar to mine. I've been eating whole foods (paleo/primal) but never lost all of my fat. Perhaps the Carb Nite Solution is worth looking into?

This sounds odd and it's not totally related, but my old MMA coach (probably knew nothing of the science of dieting and weightloss/muscle gain) had this weird suggestion to a guy who was loosing weight.

Guy got down from about 240 to 200lb just on diet and exercise, but then stopped loosing weight, even while still doing the dieting. My coach told him to eat nothing but potatoes for 7 days, then switch back to a healthy diet (while still excercising). The dude did that, then proceeded to drop another 20lb in the following months.

Not even sure how true that was, but he gave us similar approaches when trying to loose water weight for upcoming fights. Drink normal water... then 2 weeks before fight, double water in take for a week. Then one week before fight, drink as little water as possible.

Either way, the guy had to have done something right, because he was all of about 240lb and about 6'1'', with bicep veins and abs, so probably around 10-12% body fat. Must have known a thing or two about physical fitness and eating right.

my coworker who was doing a Keto diet experienced the same thing. He was losing until he hit 200 and then just stopped.. He had a family vacation for a week and took a break from the low carb (he ate sensibly, just not <20g of carbs per day..and proceeded to lose the other 15lbs.

Your body adjusts. That's why when I lift, I only lift heavy for 8 weeks, then for 4 weeks, I'll drop weight, and up my volume a bit. Then go back to heavy.

Same thing applies to dieting I think (if you're looking to lose fat). Eat low to medium carbs, then when you hit the wall, maybe for a week just.. forget the diet. Eat healthy, but eat whatever you'd like. Then switch back.

I'm guessing the same thing could apply to muscle building, too. Eat and lift until you stop gaining, then for a week, but back your calories and stop lifting. Then bump your cals and lifts back up again.
