Keyboard during Startup

For some reason I am having troubles getting my keyboard to respond during startup. When I power on my machine the keyboard backlighting comes on but the buttons do nothing until I get to the windows log in screen. At the motherboard screen where it says press delete to enter BIOS, my delete key does nothing. My next screen allows me to pick between Ubuntu and Windows 7 however my computer does not respond to me pressing keys on my keyboard and I have to wait for the default option to be selected after ten seconds or so. Is there a reason my keyboard will not do anything until I get to the windows log in screen? I have tried plugging my keyboard into a different port and that made no difference.

If you built the machine yourself, you'll need to provide a list of the components (particularly the motherboard). If it is a boxed machine from a retailer or reseller, provide the manufacturer and model.

Also, what type of keyboard do you have? Is a standard USB keyboard, wireless keyboard, PS2 keyboard, etc? Have you tried swapping out the keyboard for another one?
