Something for the "just-gotta-have-it" crowd -- a Keytronic 104-key PS/2 keyboard with built-in fingerprint scanner.

I doubt it's much use without software (about $70 from identix.com) but $16.99 ain't too bad for the keyboard alone.

Yuck, look at the requriements. It has to use a Printer Port as well as a PS/2. Great deal if you don't mind that though.

would be a cool thing if you could use you it as the password authentication for the screensaver or login for the machine

Can someone verify whether or not XP has a built in deal where this can be used as a password deal for screensaver or just plain loggin on?

Thanks

hmm... if one were inclined to do so, couldn't they just swap keyboards? Fingerprint scanner wouldn't be much good then would it?

Or am I missing something here?

That would take time and another keyboard, but i'm guessing that's doable.

I want it just for kiks

Usually, you can either use your fingerprint to gain access or the old-fashioned password. If the option to use a password as a backup was disabled and the keyboard was switched, theoretically, there would be no way to get into the computer. Obviously, this is all dependent on the software that's used but it's out there.

true. if the computer has been set up so that only the fingerprint identification will give access, then taking out the keyboard will just make the computer more difficult to be accessed. i'm sure there are way to hack in, but the basic user will be prevented access.

Your cat will chew on the keyboard cable and you will be unable to login to your fingerprint VENDOR-SPECIFIC encrypted front-end driver software until you buy another replacement. Since the maker is located on Mars and is now out of business, good luck.

There were lots of those for sale on eBay recently. The catch is that it only comes with a demo version of the required Identicator BioLogon software, which is extremely expensive if you need to buy it after the demo expires (a few $100's per user, I believe...).

Does anyone know of a freeware program that works with this keyboard?

Oh, the warning was already in inithello's initial post, sorry.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the biometric devices I've seen (and the one I'm currently using) have a traditional password option. So in the event the biometric reader failed you can still access whatever it is you are after.

Edit: Also, didn't Identicator just get bought out and is now Identix? So not necessarily "out of business" in the traditional sense.

Well, that depends on the requirements of the software. If your software REQUIRES two factor authentication (finger, and PIN) then you are dorked. It sounds like your current solution only requires ONE.

Correct, but when I set up my device I had to enter a password. When logging on I can either enter the password or use my fingerprint. I can disconnect my biometric device altogether with the software still running and get in. I just have to use my password instead. Plus you can go into the setup area and then disable fingerprint reading if something goes wrong.

I'm just trying to point out that there are setup options that one should be able to use that would alleviate any concerns.
