For those who are interested, the Keyspan IR remote control for computers is on sale at CompUSA this week for $20 (49.99-10 instant- 20 mfr MIR). This thing is really good for controlling WinAmp from across the room or for a home theater PC. They usually go for quite a bit more than this on Pricewatch.

1. Like kyguy asked, anyone know if it emulates a mouse?

2. What's the max distance you can run usb? I've heard, but forgot. I know there's a max per segment but you can use powered hubs to go farther but still a max there. Anyone know?

does it emulate a mouse?

No. It seems to use keyboard emulation. It also has a system tray program that allows you to change the button mappings for various programs. As for range, I don't know why you're asking abt USB range, but the actual IR range is quite good. The specified 35 ft is pretty conservative and I can operate it by reflecting the beam in any direction in a room. No need to point it even remotely in the direction of the receiver.

You can use it to control the mouse cursor. I have the latest drivers for it which allow that.

Thanks, glad to see it does mouse too. I'm gonna have to pick one up!

My usb question is max cable length you can use. I want to control a computer in another room, so I need to put the IR receiver in the living room and run usb cables from it to the study. How far can I go?

Personally, I find that Windows XP's voice command software works very well. I can just say "Winamp" to start Winamp, then next, stop, pause, etc to control it. You can set any app up to do this. If works from about 12' away.

U can configure the mapping yourself. I added 3 key mappings(chan+, chan-, input select) for ATI MMC, and it works good so far.

Well, I got it! The package isn't sealed so if you want to buy 'n try you can always take it back. I downloaded the latest software from the website, plugged it in & was immediately able to control Windows Media Player. Several software programs are pre-mapped, others you'll have to map. Additionally, you can use other remotes with the Keyspan receiver by mapping them. Unfortunately, I ddn't read that this unit uses a type of infrared transmission, so you have to be in the same room to use it. This kills it for me unless I get one of those things that extends infrared transmissions, which I may do (please post if you've ever used one of these).

If my computer is turned on but logged off, would I be able to program this to turn on my monitor and enter my password for me? Macro wise.

Just picked one up myself. I talked to the manager at the store and she said she didn't know where to send the rebate either. She said to call the 1800 number on the back. Now time to see how good this works

RossMAN - I think what you would do is to program one of your keyboard's "F" keys with the sequence you'd like, and then map the Keyspan remote to activate that "F" key. I was thinking about doing this with WinAmp, Windows Media Player, etc. so that if I'm in another room and want to listen to music on my PC (I already have my PC wired into my home entertainment system), I can start the program and then access the music I want. Otherwise, I could turn on my TV and just use the Keyspan remote to access whatever program I want that way. They key for me is to find an inexpensive IR extender.

I just finished playing with it. Here is my review. Installation was easy, I got the latest drivers from http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/remote/downloads/ instead of using the CD. It comes with a 3 foot USB cable but I replaced it with a 6 foot so I could move the receiver around easier. So far, I used it for Windows Media Player and Winamp. Both work flawlessly and I didn't have to map out any buttons (although I may have to map out a button for the full screen mode for Media Player). I have a wireless A/V connection between the PC (AIW Radeon) and TV so this works great for me. From the IR receiver to the couch in front of the TV, it is 32 feet. The remote works flawlessly but it must be in line of sight. If I am in the same room (within 8 feet or so of the receiver), I can point the remote in any direction for it to work. I tried seeing how far away it works from. I ran out of room at exactly 40 feet away from the receiver and the remote still works great.

My conclusion: I love it! Thanks for posting this great deal!

EDIT: I mapped the Alt-Enter (full screen mode) for Media Player. Very easy to map keys and it works just fine.
