we're talkin' a few years here, long run disadvantages as opposed to typical "drain and add/change filter" procedures.

long as you keep adding as much as burns up/drips out, and the cars already on beater status, should be fine.

Filter will eventually clog and bypass, not to mention sludge accumulation throughout the engine.

I assume it's going to become like a salt bed. You evaporate the water and the salt keeps building up. Add more water, more water evaporates, the salt gets thicker.

It takes 20 minutes to put a car on stands drain the oil change the filter and then reverse the procedure with new filter and oil. this should be done regularly, with the oil checked pereodicly to make sure the levels are correct.

if you dont have stands you can still change the oil yourself its just a little more uncomfortable.

not sure where in the world you are but most cars have a manual that can be bought from an auto shop that will detail all of the maintanance routines that need to be on the kids particular model with step by step instructions. sometimes you need an extra elbow but the instructions are all there.

its probably also worth noting that the kid should be advised that topping the brake fluid up in the same mannor not looking at why the fluid is running out can end in a multitude of nasty ways.

good luck.

Should be perfectly fine. Keep doing it. Put some in the gas tank as well.

Don't forget blinker fluid.

OMG, that's one the funniest sites I've seen! I gotta get me some of those cross-drilled brake lines and engine oil bypass lines!

As long as you remember to change the filter I don't see a problem.

My friend has been doing that for a good 2 years with his '90 civic, he just changes his filter every 6 months/5k miles.

Friend did this on his f150 for 3 yrs, finally the engine seized and once the mechanic took it apart, there was 2-3 inches of sludge on the bottom of the engine and no oil was getting thru. The filter and oil pump was also clogged up.

IMO its stupid not to change the oil and filter  , it takes 20 minutes doing it yourself or pay 30$ at a Jiffy lube or dealer for an oil change.

Haha, that's great, thanks Sparky!

If it's an old VW bug, the oil change procedure is to add a quart of oil with each tank of gas and let it drain all over the freeway as you drive. That's just how they were made.

On the pickup I had when I was a kid, I used to put the used oil out of my backhoe into it. That truck leaked a LOT of oil.

If the car leaks enough oil, it could actually work.

However, if your car leaks enough oil to make the filter nonessential, you are being incredibly antisocial by not fixing the leak.

If you absolutely despise the planet and all lifeforms on it, and also despise your fellow motorists (especially motorcyclists), keep doing this.
