Drink limeade and lemonade? I've heard that helps.

Lol
I go 1 level harder core and drink apple cider vinegar. Well not straight. It’s amazing with diet soda and not bad with water or water and lemon.

For a while I just used lemon juice and water, but it starts to churn your stomach after a while.

I drink water and no milk.

It stopped my kidney stones. After 3 of them, I don't want anymore.

Try drinking a lot of water throughout the day. The issue most people have is that they don't drink enough water. It helps flush out toxins and will help prevent stones.
Yes, you are right. But only small size stones can flush out with water intake. If stones size is large then consult urologist.

I'm talking about preventing kidney stones. You've got to drink a ton of water. Especially if you are in a position to get them.

It's a Kidney issue. See a Nephrologist, not a urologist. Not only are stones painful, but it means your kidneys are not functioning correctly. There are medications you can take so you never have stones a again.

AFAIK, I've never had one. The stories I've heard make me dread them.

Why do some people get them and others not? Is there anything you can do to lessen the likelihood of getting them?

I did have a weird syndrome maybe a year ago that returned some months later. It was a sudden stabbing pain maybe an inch below my navel and around 3-4 inches to the left. Would happen suddenly and without warning and the pain was intense/crippling. It would go away within a minute, usually less. Then probably return a day or so later. Then stopped happening but I have the feeling something might be going on in there (slight pain occasionally). My doctor doesn't know what it is, has some ideas, but it's not happened for a few months.

That (kidney functioning) issue could be possible. But I suffered only with the kidney stone issue and with the help of my urologist , now I recovered.

Did he figure out what type of kidney stone you had, why, and start treatment for it? Or are you just waiting to have another?

Yeah that could be a stone. Of course could be something else, or it could just be random pain that we all get from time to time. But stones act like that. They'll flare up for a minute/hour/day/week and then go dormant for months/years...even decades. Then one day it will suddenly decide to pop out the kidney entirely and then it's a world of pain.

I've had all sorts of tests for my stones. They seem confused as to why I get mine. Had 24 hour urine tests, blood tests, CT scan, xrays. Always seems to be a stone or two floating around my left kidney. Always my left. Kidney function is 100%. Oh well. Could be worse

My dad used to get them all the time but I made him start drinking shots of lemon juice every day and he hasn't had one since then.

In my email exchange with my PCP doctor he didn't mention that possibility. He did mention a few others. Maybe he didn't want to alarm me with that bit of info! Of course, if the pains continued or worsened he was up for testing of some kind, IIRC. But I've not had anything other then slight and very occasional pain in the region for a few months, so it's knock on wood here. Meantime, I guess I'll try to get enough H2O running through my system. In truth, I rarely drink just plain water. A lot of coffee. Some herb tea (especially in winter!), occasionally some weak lemonade with a bit of stevia powder in it, whatever water is contained in the foods I eat.

Edit: ... and average less than 2 ounces of red wine a day.

I use to get them every couple of years. For the most part I would experience sharp pain for a few minutes on and off over a couple of hours. Then it would stop. After they started I would up my water intake to push it through my system. Only had one case were it was so bad that I went to the hospital. In that case I got major painkiller. I also had to pee into a filter until I caught the stone. In my case it was a calcium stone. I got a list of items that I should not eat but to be honest I never followed it. Have not had one in a number of years. Only think I changed was I got married so maybe I'm eating better than I use to.

That's a good thing if you have avoided soda and sports drinks. Generally, the main cause of kidney stone is dehydration. I suggest you to limit on your diet -

You may want to avoid these foods to help reduce the amount of oxalate in your urine:
  • nuts and nut products
  • peanuts—which are legumes, not nuts, and are high in oxalate
  • rhubarb
  • spinach
  • wheat bran
  • reduce Sodium
  • limit animal protein
  • get enough calcium food
  • reduce sodium (salt)
Please get in touch with doctor, because doctor can suggest you in better way.

@paperfist ..
A kidney stone is a hard mass of minerals & salts that forms tiny crystals in the kidney. It can be caused by drinking any of the listed drinks:
  • Colas rich in phosphate
  • Miso soup
  • Decaffeinated coffee
  • Tea

How about coffee? I drink a lot of coffee, none of the above except for the rare cup of tea. I must get 60+% of my water from coffee, the rest from foods, pretty much. However, I eat a fair amount of nuts and some peanut butter. I also have been eating spinach, because I tend to be a bit anemic. Likewise I try to eat some red meat.

Coffee is an acceptable beverage for kidney disease. First thing we have to consider is the nutritional content of coffee. An 8 oz. cup of black coffee has 116 mg of potassium. This is considered as a low potassium food. The researchers found that decaffeinated coffee also resulted in a 10 percent reduction in the formation of kidney stone. Also, you should limit animal protein (meat) to reduce the kidney stone formation.

I like to say I don't eat enough meat to keep a cat alive. Still, I've been told I'm eating too much meat. I never pig out on it, though. I haven't eaten a steak in decades, IIRC.

My Pulmonologist will not let them go in and get it, because they will have to put me under and I am not a candidate presently for any type of surgery!
We are working on improving my breathing. For the last few years my breathing has ben that of a 90 year old man! I am nor in some cardio/pulmonary exercise classes and they seem to be helping.
hopefully in the next 6 months I will be cleared for surgery!
