Odds of dying in a bus accident are 1:179k. Odds of dying on steps are 1:2.7k. Would you like me to recommend a harness/lanyard for you? If I go through the effort, I'll need you to promise me you won't ever go within 6' of steps without being clipped. Safety at any cost. You can never be too careful, or have too many regulations.
Great, apt, poignant comparison! Math is always our friend.

I think most kids have it way too easy then when I was a kid. Like I posted earlier, my mother laughed at me after I told her it was too cold to walk to school.

Was this really young kids? I know for super young kids they do go straight to the house, but when they get older it's assigned bus stops.

I remember having to go out and wait in -45 blowing snow, on one hand I could not wait for the bus to show up because I was freezing, but on the other hand I hoped it did not show up because it might mean a snow day. Sometimes a random person in their car would stop by and tell me there's no buses today. Those are the real heros in kids' lives. I'd proceed to walk home all happy that I have a day off to go play in the snow.

For high school the school was just a block away so I walked. Same deal, get to school and find out it's a snow day, sweet! Walk back home. We did not get that many snow days back then though, maybe like 5 per year. It had to be VERY cold to get a snow day just for the cold, and if it was a week straight of -45's and colder then they would maybe only have like 1-2 snow days then after that it's too bad, you're going to school. Now they seem to declare them more often.

Then you hit college, and then the work force. There are zero snow days.

Back in "your day" there werent assloads of mass shootings and kidnappings.

Its not a nanny state. Parents today have very good reasons to fear for their childs lives.

BWAHAHAHAHHA. Could you BE any more anecdotal and melodramatic?

I waited out in the frigid cold many a day for the bus. Living in northern NY, our Winters are horrible too. Even so, my mother would still take mercy on me sometimes and sit with me in the car with the heater blowing on the days when it was 30 below F with strong winds and windchill.

I think you are remembering it incorrectly. She stayed in the car while watching you freeze your ass off :awe:

That is what happens when you condone nanny state :awe:

Our kid walks to the bus stop and wait for the bus. It's like 100m from my house.

Edit, checked google maps, more like 100m
Meters!?! What country do you think you live in, a privileged one? Elitist! LOL

Was behind a bus this morning on a decently busy road. Every few houses or so the bus would stop with its red lights flashing and sit there waiting for kids to leave their house and walk to the bus. Several of the houses were a good distance from the road leading to surprisingly long stops and a very long line of cars sitting behind the bus. (But maybe its just this route/district for some reason?)

Kids these days. Back in my day we had to wait outside for the bus even though we were standing uphill both ways through the snow. It was character building.
Bolded for the most likely reason. They don't want kids waiting next to a busy road. For my kids, it's in a circle so there's hardly any traffic.

I am uninitiated. I've always wanted to live where it snowed every year. The closest I got was Sacramento, no snow, but seasons changed, unlike here down south. The fall colors, cool!

Then I'd see the blizzards people went through back east, the unimaginably cold spells. Getting stuck, needing a separate set of wheels/tires. Seeing what pollution did to sitting snow, in Chicago for training once, seeing what I called the black snow. My romanticized thoughts of the wonders of snow diminished fast.

About 9 years ago a neighbors child was kidnapped on the way home from school and murdered. She was very close to my kids. Best of friends. They initially thought she was with my stepson because he hadn't come home yet either. I'm more cautious as a result but even I find the current state of things to be a little over the top.
The odds of that kind of kidnapping are very very low. But you seem to realize that. There are people like my wife who think the bogey man is around every corner. I blame it on her lackluster math skills. But maybe it is just stupidity too.

Edit: I have kids and am not afraid of dumb things.

Yeah I believe in the law of averages. I've also had an employee who was supposed to come in to be fired. instead he went to the job site that night and put two bullets in the head of the supervisor. So I don't worry about workplace shootings either. What are the odds it happens twice?!

When I drive by bus stops, I usually see groups of kids, at least two. I'd have to imagine two kids would be able to fend off your average basement-dwelling pedo.

If you go north enough where there's less people then there's less pollution. Though the sand they put on the roads gets into the snow banks so it can still look "gross" at times but at least it's sand and not actually air pollution being filtered. The best is how nice it can look around Christmas time though.

We don't often get this much snow often anymore but that was several years back when we had something closer to a normal winter.

The -40's are also a good way to find out which parts of your house are not well sealed.

That's fixed now.

There seems to be amber alerts quite often now compared to before. I'd say it's a valid concern now days, more than ever before. Lots of crazies out there.

My wife drives our son to school most days but he also rides his bike to school one or two days a week. Yes, he's becoming a cyclist just like his old man. He is now part of the problem.

It's not like the kids are making these policies. The "back in my day" crowd is the one making these rules.

by subsidized you mean dropped off at the grand parents right?

nope. by taxes. I have no kids but I realize some things are beneficial for society. others are ignorant of that. so without kids I still wouldn't mind some of my taxes going to good programs like that.

I walked a mile each way to school in the 1950's, both directions were up hill. Even if the temperature was 20 degrees below zero

Funny thing is when I walked to high school it really WAS uphill, but just one way. Like two rather steep hills lol. When it hits -30's and colder the snow packs down really hard on the sidewalk and it actually gets quite slippery. Was only like a couple blocks though. Going back home was downhill all the way, I could practically skate home lol.
