Lightning cable from Apple is more robust, four times the price though.

No matter what you get, make sure you get a good case. I bought otter box cases for both my sons and they have had a few drops, no issues yet.

Then get the kid branded one with the worry free guarantee and they will replace the USB port when it falls off:

There is no real (aka not Leapfrog or something) tablet for DESIGNED for small children, tablets are delicate devices and small children are terrorists when it comes to ripping the value out of things. A strong warranty is the closest thing you can get to piece of mind.

I have 2 Nexus 7's (2013 rev) that have Poetic TurtleSkin bumper cases on them for my 2 and 4 year olds (I know, I know, but they're limited to 1 hour total screen time per day, including TV)

We use wireless charging, so no worries about usb ports wearing out. Besides, they go a few days between charges without issue. They've been dropped several times onto tile and no damage (so far), so the cases do their job.

Nova launcher is fairly locked down, so they just launch apps out of single homescreen folder, with no app drawer access. Most built in apps are disabled as well.

Something to consider, hope this is helpful.

I was going to mention that the other day, but he seems to have some kind of Fire aversion.

GL, I guess.

Well thanks; after some more search about 5 generation Kindle i've decided to go with the Kindle fire 7 cheaper Kids tablet, since i red reviews of it not having that USB port falling since generation 4, and 2 years warranty no questions asked and 1 year free stuff, i got also screen protector and a 32 gb card, well for a 5 years kid you don't want to spend too much money.

My daughter is using my old iPad mini 2 with a nice thick case with tons of rubber. She loves it.

Since my daughter was five she has been using hand-me-down iPads. She's had an iPad 2 now for three years or so without issue. Thinking of replacing it soon it is quite slow now. Just put a decent case on it and you'll be good.

iPad mini 2-4 with a proper case.

Or else iPad Air 1-2 with a proper case.

I've tried EVERYTHING and everything but an iPad frustrates (lack of polished kids app in particular on android). Runner up: the cheapest kindle tablet that has freetime: very cool kids-centric appstore and robust parental controls including timers and reading goals. ANdroid was just clunky trying to customize, but I can dig up the name of the kids launcher I used (I tried every one, only one was decent but cost $$)
