the video says ONE kid got a few years, the other 4 got 1 year probation.

the kid that went to jail could get out in less on “good” behavior

I have not looked up anything to verify the videos claims

If true that is terrible. They should all be punished to the maximum extent allowed.

Those rocks were huge, I don't know how they thought this was even remotely funny. Throwing snow balls or trash etc is one thing (not that it's ok) but actual rocks that size are guaranteed to seriously injure or kill someone, and at minimum severely damage a vehicle.

What these kids did was inexcusable.

HOWEVER they were kids..... yes they should have been severely punished BUT with what we know know about the "limitations" of the teenage brain, I DO NOT support completely ruining their lives even though it was pretty terrible.

It's a fine line but to me this is not the same as bringing a rifle to school and shooting the place up which would rate "throwing away the key".

I agree, but there’s a huge difference between a year of probation for 4 of them, 1 going to jail for a couple years, and ruining their lives. Just so much grey area there.

for instance, a solid 3-5 each. Still young enough to make something of themselves, and 25 years shared

Justice costs money.

Juvys get it easier precisely because they have many years of potential income tax generation to offset causing a negligent loss of life(murder is something that is harder to let slide without backlash. In addition, some of that should go to paying back the victims if a civil suit was filed or restitution was filed.

In addition, the legal system in America is in particular, often hesitant in overly long punishments because that's meat for prison reformers to chew on.

The best time to do crime is before the time of reaching legal adulthood, and I have a hunch some communities' youth are fully aware of the lack of power the state has over crimes committed as a minor.

The government does not really care when people break laws that affect only regular people. If the person in the car happened to be someone from the government, or a cop, a CEO or maybe even a celeb, they'd be getting more time, maybe even life. Kind of sad how it works. The other way around works too, if the kid's dad was rich or worked for the government or otherwise an influential person, they would be getting no time at all.

Government is a business. The first amongst all businesses. Rich people have paid more taxes into the government moreso than poor people, both directly and indirectly.

By raw numbers, sure. By percentages? I don't think it's even close in most cases.
Businessmen "create jobs", and thus cause an income tax increase via their employees' income taxes.

That's why states argue and plead hard when a big fish wants to establish something in their locale. FBI headquarters is a big deal in my area, and I'm rooting for NoVA to win it because I hate PG County(high tax rates, Democratic locale, but the money is clearly not well spent). Crystal City got one of the Amazon HQs. They wouldn't care unless there was the expectation of more big money rolling in.

In local cities, it's all part of of basic budgeting, and income tax is a very big part of said budgets. Rather than maximize profits, the local government aim to maximize incoming revenue from revenue sources.
