Murder charges announced for 5 teens after rock thrown from I-75 overpass in Michigan kills man
Police say 5 cars hit by rocks thrown from overpass

to have not just one, but five people in a group think this is a good idea?

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news...ly-rock-throwing-incident-on-i-75-in-michigan

Kyle Anger, 17; Mark Sekelsky, 16; Mikadyn Payne, 16; Trevor Gray, 15; and Alexander Miller, 15, are all from Clio, Michigan.

four other cars were struck with large rocks and were waiting for police to arrive when the van was hit.

. . .

"We know we found 20 rocks, one weighing 20 pounds, on I-75," Pickell said.

Police said it was a six-pound rock thrown from the Dodge Road overpass that went through the windshield of a van White was riding in. White was hit in the chest and head, causing major trauma.

Investigators said the five teens left the overpass and drove to a McDonald's to eat.

I don't know, can you parent your kid to be smart enough not to partake in this when "all their friends" are doing it? Would your kid just not go, would they simply leave the group?

Their life is pretty much over before it begins, with a ~15 year sentence. What a cloud over their parents' heads.

Unfortunately, not only is this not new, it happens all over.

i haven't done extensive research on this, but has there ever been such a large group involved?

all the previous ones i recall were by individuals

Well of course you can teach right from wrong but it's not going to be 100% compliance. I coach a bunch of good kids at heart but undoubtedly they will do stupid shit, even physical, despite repeated attempts at curbing it with various forms of reprimand. The more of them there are, the worse the behavior is, the quicker common sense goes out the window.

Do you have kids older than 5?

Compliance isn't the parent's responsibility, it's theirs. The parent's responsibility is to provide for their well being and train them for what they will face in life. This article is an excellent teaching case. Every parent should show their teens this article and talk to them about it, making the consequences clear, and checking to make sure they understand by asking them what they would do if their "friends" would pressure them into partaking in such behavior.

I dunno. I vaguely remember groups of kids throwing rock and concrete off the pedestrian walkways over I-90 in Spokane when I was a kid...causing the state to enclose said walkways with something similar to chain link fencing.

Maybe the ones you remember, only one kid/individual got caught?

We seem to have quite a history of it though. Can't say for certain but it feels like we get at least one death every year from this in SE MI

Large group? Not sure. I'm pretty sure there have been at least a couple of 2-3 kids being charged

This is local to me. My niece is acquainted with a couple of those boys from school. Be interesting to see if they offer some of them a plea deal down to manslaughter or if this prosecutor rides this horse to the finish line. I know of specific cases around here where someone killed someone in a fight by throwing a rock at them and they got manslaughter and were out in 4 or 5 years. The difference is that those cases never got any real coverage in the media. I am pretty certain this will be to high profile and these boys are all likely to get tagged with the full charge. Clio is a relatively small community so almost everybody knows at least one of these kids or their parents. Worst case of Frontal Lobe syndrome your likely to ever see.

Agree about using it as a teaching case. I question whether there was any peer pressure to do such a thing. It's likely more a case of choosing to stay with the group rather than leave it because they feel it would be uncool. This is why I said earlier that it's not only about lack of parenting that things like this happen, all the time. But people automatically blame them first.

any thoughts on them? is it surprising that they did something like this?

I remember being shown in school a short film about a teen doing this and show what would happen and warning us kids not to do this.

I don't think it's that easy. It's easy to teach them to not be the instigator, or rather the person that throws the rocks or comes up with the idea of throwing the rocks - but no one at that age of high school-ish is going to say to his group of friends "No guys, this isn't cool, I'm going home now because you guys are doing bad stuff".

I would think not all 5 of them were throwing rocks, but were simply part of the group and didn't run away when they started.

Kids spend more time at school with each other, than with you. Your children are raised by their peers.

My friends and I used to pee off the overpass in the middle of the night when we were kids. Got a motorcyclist once but never got the holy grail convertible. These are the harmless antics of pre-teens, throwing rocks is basically something so dumb and dangerous I wish there was still some place we could just send criminals like Australia. "You appear to be too dumb to live, therefore we sentence you to Australia. If you survive well then there was hope for you after-all, if not then no big loss"

Punishment should be mandatory public caning or lashes, hard labor, and forced to join the military for discipline.

Damn can't say I never done something like that. We did snowballs I know but some of them might as well been rocks. We were stupid.

I was driving too mich one year on a rural interstate and a snowball hit my truck scared the shit out of me. I pulled over down the road and looked back but didn't see anyone. Karma.
