does anyone know if it's bad to leave your batteries in the charger for a long time even after they are fully charged?

I suppose it depends on what you consider a "long time". 10 hours? 10 months?

The basic charger from Thomas Distributing supposedly doesn't harm the batteries if left on the charger. I keeps them topped off until you remove them.

It depends on which charger you have. The fuji charger and the kodak chargers tell you in the instructions not to leave batteries in the charger after they are fully charged. The Rayovac 8 hour charger says the batteries can be left in the charger all the time to maintain a full charge, until they are ready to be used. I have 4 chargers, 2 kodaks, 1 Fuji, and 1 Rayovac 8 hour.

I have one energizer charger, and use it for every battery I own. Radio shack, Raovack, Energizer, powmax and now these. Both Nicad and NiMH.

Never had a problem with leafing any of them in the charger for months on end.

I swear, it is this charger but with an energizer label. Look 100% the same. Here is a picture of mine: Picture

I was wondering if I would be able to mod this really old NiHM laptop battery and replace the ones inside? Thanks for any replies.

whats the verdict on using other chargers with these batteries. to me it seems like it would be no big deal... except maybe the mAH rating...

i currently have a black 4 slot charger from Panasonic (which i got at BJ's wholesale club) along with Panasonic batteries (also from BJs), charger says 5-hour charge on it. seems like it only does nimh

i have an white 4 slot charger from Energizer (which i think i got at Sam's club) along with Energizer batteries. charger says 15-hour charge cycle. does NiCd and niMH

finally i have a biege Olympus Camedia brand recharger with no specified charge time, and olympus camedia batteries. looks like it only does nimh

is the energizer making the best charges since it takes the longest to charge?

the energizers and olympus batteries are 1700mAH. the panasonic are 1600mAH (omg am i getting gyped?). i dont really know what that means, but the only problem i could think of was if chargers could only charge up to 1700mAH or 1600mAH... but somehow chargers must know when battery is full because batteries could be put in charger in various states of power levels... the batteries for sale here are 1800mAH.

higher mAH is better i assume, but means what exactly?

will i be able to safely charge this 1800mAH batteries in chargers 'designed' for other batteries?

I also have the Panasonic charger from B.J.s. The charger does say that it's a 5hr. charger but the instructions say 4 hr. for an 1100mAh battery, wouldn't that make it almost 6 hrs for a 1600mAh battery and close to 7 hrs. for an 1800mAh? Does the charging time go up in a ratio to the mAh (twice the mAh = twice the charging time. With this charger it may be important to know the approx. charging time since the package says "please immediately unplug the charger after the times indicated below, otherwise, the batteries may overheat, leak or the number of times which they may be charged will be decreased." Is this a good enough charger for the 1800 batteries or should I get a different one? I got in on this deal last night, only $1.51/ bat with shipping. Thanks for the heads up about the un-secure checkout, I used Paypal. Lynn

ew i never read that... what a pain. like someone is actually going to sit around watching their battery charger, or set an alarm, and unplug it right when its done

i have noticed that (when i come back days later after setting batteries to recharge) that the lights on the charger shut off, and if i put new batteries in, it wont start charging them unless i physically unplug and replug the unit... maybe this has something to do with it

anyway, can anyone answer my questions?

thx

Heh, after you check out they give you a 5% discount code applicable to your next order... or at least they did because I bought $71 worth of stuff (I *wink* _needed_ a charger that switches to trickle mode and has more than 4 slots). I have enough batteries to last me way too long at this point, like I'm going to use their code.

12 PCS AAA 650mAH Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries 1 $9.49 $9.49
24 PCS AA 1800mAH Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries 1 $29.50 $29.50
6988 Computer-Controlled Ni-MH and Ni-Cd Smart Battery Charger 1 $25.99 $25.99
Totals
Sub Total: $64.98
Shipping: $6.31
Total: $71.29

Well with the battery chargers that say not to leave the batteries in after they are fully charged, the worse that can happen is that they explode.....there's your "alarm"

The longer a charger takes to recharge a better, theoretically, the longer the battery will last, ie, the more times it can be supposedly re-charged.

A battery charge designed for NiMH batteries can charge any mHA rated NiMH battery of the type(ie AAA, AA, etc) it can fit into it. (check your package or manual)

Your other question was the mAh rating. The higher the mAh rating, the longer the battery will last before it needs to be recharged.
Ie, the 1800 mAh AAs will run longer than the 1600 mAh AA's I got from Big Lot deal a while ago. Think of mAh as capacity.
1800 mAh is like a keg of beer, and 1600 mAh is like 3/4 keg. Ah those frat days.....

it is very hard to do this. Laptop battery has a special IC chip to control the charging and discharging.

I noticed it says they can be charged 1000 times. Does the length of the battery life decrease every time they get recharged? Will the 5th recharge and the 200th recharge provide the same battery life?

When did you order? My order is still "PENDING".

I ordered yesterday.

If you live in north day (Oakland/SF), then you MIGHT be able to pick it up locally since they are in El Cerrito, CA (about 10 miles north of Oakland)

Evadman, please don't post picks that have your dirty underwear lying on the floor in them. You can clearly see your "Haynes" to the right of what appears to be an air conditioner on the floor, below your stack of Hot Rod/Porno mags.

You are supposed to use chargers designed for NiMH batteries. the follow Q&A may help u
<< Question:
Question #1:
My Digital Camera uses 1.5V "AA" batteries and your NiMH "AA" batteries are 1.2V. Will they still work ?

Answer #1:
Yes, you can safely use our NiMH batteries without any problems. They can be used in place of your original batteries in almost all digital cameras , film cameras, flash units as well as most other electronic equipment. Actually when they are fully charged they will measure around 1.4v per cell . NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are fast becoming the most popular choice of digital camera users, photographers, cellular phone and laptop users, and many others because these batteries have a much higher capacity and are virtually memory free. These batteries do not need to be discharged every time before recharging. NiMH batteries can be damaged from heat by overcharging but this is easily avoided by using a high quality, microprocessor controlled battery charger or a charger designed for NiMH batteries and charging as directed. >>

Between a brand name battery and a generic battery of the same "rated" label
capacity, the brand name battery in general has a "truer" mah rating than the
generic ones (different manuf. testing criteria etc).

Batteries lose a tiny bit of capacity after each recharge cycle. How much depends
on how it was engineered, how hot the battery gets during charging (hotter = shorter life),
how low the battery was drained (do not drain NiMH batteries below 1 volt) and
whether you overcharge the batteries frequently or not...

With well manufactured batteries and decent care, you shouldn't notice too much of
a difference for the first 100 or so cycles... if you ever reach 500 cycles, the capacity
could be anywhere from 0-80% of the original amount...

Depends on the application, and if you are talking usage life or shelf life. They last MUCH MUCH longer than alkaline (i.e. "regular" batts) in stuff like digital camera. On things like remote controls, no its a bad idea. Why? Because rechargable batteries lose approximately 1% of the charge per day, so in 3 months they are totally dead. Alkaline you can put in a drawer for years and still use it.
