A killer whale killed a trainer Wednesday afternoon at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Department said. The spokesman, John Mulhall, said the trainer was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident did not occur during a performance, said a spokeswoman for SeaWorld, who added that more information was to be released soon.

A female whale trainer died this afternoon at SeaWorld’s Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida, with witnesses saying she was killed during a public "Killer Whale" show.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, a local TV station is reporting that a female employee was killed after she was grabbed by one of the theme park's whales at the start of a public show.

A park guest and witness told the local TV station that the veteran trainer had just introduced the show to the audience when the whale shot out of the water and grabbed the woman.

"He was thrashing her around pretty good. It was violent,'" she said, according to the Local 6 report.

The whale "took off really fast in the tank, and then he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing around, and one of her shoes flew off."

Wonder what they'll do with it.

Nothing, aside from taking it out of performances. They'll still train it from the surface with food, games and brain teasers...but they won't be going in the tank with it anymore.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, and it won't be the last.

edit: Some reports are saying this was the same whale that killed the homeless guy back in 1999. If that's true I'm surprised they were training in-tank with it since.

I read this book called Whale Done and it talked about positive reinforcement. The author asked the trainers at Sea World how they managed to get killer whales to jump through hoops and the trainer said "positive reinforcement; its your only option" and also said "you can't yell at a whale or use any negative reinforcement, because frankly, it will eat you".

Killer whales are cool though. I know several people who've kayaked in Puget sound when they came up pretty close by but never bothered them.
