While we may think animals are domesticated, they are still animals.

I have no sympathy for those that choose to work with animals.

They can attack at any time, and for reasons we can't fathom.

I do, however, find the reports of the Orca (being petulant) interesting...

Here are experienced animal people... getting deaded. (that says a lot)

-John

So can people, ever watch the news?

linking to peta as your source you've failed from the start. comparing killer whale training to electric shocks just shows how far out there you are.

you really think that horses naturally carry other animals on their backs? give me a break.
Why does linking to PETA fails? They do report the facts in that link, regardless of the bullshit they often throw around.

And no, I wasn't comparing captive Orcas to other animal cruelties etc. I was just responding to your saying that what they make animals do 'entertains' them and that their natural lives are filled with boredom. And to you saying something about people getting over-sentimental about nature.

For the horses thing - it's reciprocal altruism. Both species benefit from each other. Provided the humans take good care of the horses and the horses don't buck the humans off while galloping.

Horses are animals, too.

Entertainment?

How could a captive animal provide entertainment?

-John

Captive humans can provide entertainment. That would be a captive animal.
:awe:
All in the eyes of the captors, [un]fortunately.

But in all seriousness, to what extent does "captive" mean here?

Domestic animals are captive, are they not? Is there no entertainment to be found from pets?

Entertainment can also come in many forms. Tricks are one way, but another is awe, a sense of wonderment. At least, I consider myself entertained when I am awe-struck.

Am I saying it is right? Well, depends.
I don't find keeping wild animals in zoos to be wrong, but orcas deserve better facilities.

But to play devil's advocate and take that to the next level - what about zoos in general? The very concept is terrible and wrong. We are merely playing to our own image of superiority by taking animals from around the world and confining them to very small, moderately-themed walled confinement.
It's why captivity for most species results in shorter lifespans. I guarantee their is mental stress results in physiological stress which plays havoc on the body over the long term. Otherwise there is just no physical reason for a shorter lifespan, especially considering nature is far more brutal and unforgiving than confinement. Food can be far more nutritious in confinement for animals yet often they fail to live as long of a life as they are capable of, on average.

The arguement I have heard against Zoos, and Sea World, etc., is that while once, they introduced us to these animals, today, we have TV, and don't need to capture/steal/incarcerate/animals, but rather, we can see them in their habitats, doing what they do.

The zoos back in the days were horrible places. Still the case in many zoos undoubtedly around the world, but many are also decent in regards to meeting the wild animals' natural demands. It is especially important for those under severe threat such as cheetahs, elephants etc to have 'ambassadors' in good zoos to educate the public and raise awareness.

And to go to the 'captive' thing, there's a difference between a wild animal, and a domesticated one.

Zoos do so much to help animals it's out of this world. All the research, study, etc. Anybody that says they love animals has to love all the work and benefit zoos provide.

Time to change their name to 'murder whales.'

This is a real loss for the white community.

Sure but to compare a zoo to an amusement park with marine mammals is quite the stretch as far as research is concerned.
