Well that's what you get for exploiting a wild marine animal and confining it to a bathtub relative to the size of the ocean. Tilikum wasn't born in confinement, he had the pleasure of being a wild animal at the place he should be for several years until he was captured in Icelandic water. That's if my memory recalls.

Seriously, the only places where wild animals belong is their wild habitats, or if they are endangered, zoos that treat them right and focus on rehabilitation. Nowhere else. Not in some mansion where a chimp finally goes psycho and rips the face off a woman etc. And I believe I read somewhere that some American keeps an elephant as a pet??? Ridiculous.

They have feelings. They are intelligent animals. They are social animals. They have many needs akin to our own, like family and social structure and environmental aspects which we humans simply cannot imitate or make up for. And unfortunately when a caged animal goes berserk and hurts or kills someone, the blame most usually goes to the unfortunate animal, not the society of the human owners that think keeping wild animals to exploit them or as pets is something that is not horribly and naturally wrong.

Just so you know, I'm not a PETA supporter. I stand by most of their ethics, but not entirely their methods to convey said ethics.

Yeah seriously, that whale has been kept in a tiny pool and doing the same tricks for what ~20 years? Even human become insane if treated the same way, just look at some postal workers. And we don't even know if the whale attacked the trainer. The whale could've being playful and not realizing human can't hold our breath or as sturdy like them.

Bottomline, we kept those animals in captivity for our pleasure. We should be held accountable when something tragic happens as the result.

The funny thing is that there's never been an instance of killer whales being aggressive to humans in the wild. I guess if I was trapped at sea world my whole life I'd be pretty pissed and ready to kill someone too.

So nobody is paying attention to my comments apparently.

FYI: Killer Whales, despite the name, are not whales.
They are far more closely related to the common dolphin than to whales.

In the same line of thinking others have posted, like dolphins (and most porpoises), they are very intelligent animals.
Also, one common theory is that the Canine genetic line was once shared with the porpoise genetic line (common ancestor), which explains the social behavior and the intelligence that often goes hand-in-hand with that behavior.

A lot of the differences in our attitude toward them just comes with the societal endearment and more importantly, the nature of the animal.
Animals like dolphins and orcas are hard to domesticate because there is, well, an obvious natural barrier to such an idea. They breath like us but are still creatures of the sea, so how can we treat the animals like we would a domestic animal? They are of the same mental capacity in most ways, but we can't possibly give the same emotional attention for said obvious reasons.

Most people give dolphins credit where it is due, and recognize their intelligence. Orcas, apart from the people that are more involved with them, don't receive that same credit.

I'm really wondering what idiot thought it would be a good idea to try and train one of the most vicious killers in the ocean. It really is baffling to me why they keep doing this shit.

I had job before this, I had a job before this. Ultimately, it was that job that drove me into this. I worked at an aquarium, an aquarium with lots of money from the government so it was HUUUGGEE! I uh I was a clean n' scrub man we called each other in the C n' S union. I scrubbed the inside of the killerwhaletank. The, and after a while the boys in the C n' S or clean n' scrub we just sort of made it one word: the killerwhaletank, the killerwhaletank uh, the killerwhaletank uh. I'm going into the killerwhaletank UH yeah. I got along with these two big beasts so well, it was like they knew me they looked at me with their hundred year old eyes and it was like they knew me. High, I'd put on my SCUBA gear, my mask, my regulator, {breath} and I'd fall into the tank with nary a sound maybe a pfftt. And then I was underwater. Sometimes, I'd jump out, right in front of the window when people are expecting a killerwhale and they see a human, they get spooked. Spooked. Anyway I'd do that. But I was in the water this particular day, unbeknownst to me, Shamu and Bartholomew, their relationship had grown stale, seems I was going in there so much and looking so good, Shamu took a shining to me, and they're so smart those things ya know they've got all these human emotions, love, lust, GREED, hundred year old eye jealousy. Bartholomew was LIVID. Unbeknownst to me I can't hear a goddamn thing underwater. He came up he was bumping up against me a lot. The stale, killerwhale, bumping up against someone so pale and frail. How was I to know the killerwhale whose relationship had gone stale, well, he brushes up against me sometimes, skin's like sandpaper I say "Hey man, Bartholomew what's up? What's up? What's going on big fella? What is it? What is it? I, I don't wanna steal your mommy, and I sure don't want to take the place of your daddy, I only want to be your friend." And he circled around and I thought we were all patched up and I was scrubbing and he took my- he came up, he came up, he came up, he ripped my left arm off. I mean the killerwhale they're beasts of the deep they're I mean they're quite dossile and friendly in captivity but somewhere along the line, the thousands of years of breeding just snapped and he took my left arm, man he took my left arm, took my f*cking left arm. "Wha-What is it Bartholomew?" I spoke to him in a language he could understand, as I came back.

A killer whale has never killed a human in the wild. What do you expect when you lock a 30ft animal in a 200ft cage and try to play with it.

you keep a dog in your house for 20 years he should rip your face off or maul your children right?

occasionally they do!!

so in conclusion, dog ownership is clearly barbaric and cruel, ban it.

yay hysteria

First off our condolences for the family of the deceased.

I was a VIP visitor of this facility in 2006 and got to sea things that most people don't. While I find the technology used to maintain marine life somewhat fascinating the keeping of cetacea in captive pools is something I strongly disagree with.

This incident just shows what can go wrong and often the case when it does the results are tragic.

Please don't try to compare this to keeping pets. These are not domesticated animals. Even though orcas have been reared in captivity their needs simply cannot be fulfilled by keeping them in concrete pools - no matter the size!

The water quality is far from ideal - a fish released in this pool would have instant gill damage from the chlorine levels! The pools also present a very uncomfortable acoustic environment for these creatures.

If you ask an attendant why some of the (bulls') tails are curved over they will not tell you the truth! The truth is they spend most of their lives swimming in circles near the surface. Without water surrounding the dorsal appendage to provide buoyant support it lays over. A healthy bull in the wild can have a dorsal fin that stands well over six feet tall! Females usually don't have this issue in captivity because theirs is smaller but the larger ones do bend at the tip.

These animals also swim about 150+ miles per day. That's a lot of laps around the pool! They don't like to be be fed but rather hunt and play with their food.

As to why this happens - grabbing a trusted person - is anyone's guess. Frequently other whales can be observed showing a lack of interest in obeying simple commands before something awry occurs. It could be a warning sign, or not. Problem is this is entertainment, and the show must go on.

No matter what the conditions, incidents happen. Just read the news and see what people do on a daily basis.
