why did the Asian stock market take such a beating over this news?
I understand that there is more political instability since we don't know much about the successor but this is good news that Kim Jong Il is dead. With the already bear sentiment in the market that has been going on for a while, people are saying this is negative news which I don't agree with. I would have expected to see the major Asian indexes to rise.

Because investors always jump after ridiculous rumors and it appears that the rumor currently floating around on the stock markets is that chaos in North Korea will ensue and create a conflict with surrounding countries, particularly South Korea.

Love him or hate him, the death of Kim Jung Il has been expected for years. As Kim has been a poster child for Western hatred and a lightening rod for all that is wrong in North Korea.

And even as Kim dead body has barely cooled, it still presents a historic opportunity to let North Korean Western hatred die with Kim Jung Il.

Such opportunities don't often occur, and its a two way street between the West and North Korea as the designated successor is Kim Jung UM. If the West plays their cards rights, and cuts Kim Jung UM some slack while extending an olive branch of carrots and no immediate sticks. Its becomes possible for North and South Korean reunification. If not, the ground hog comes out and predicts another 20 years of counter productive stalemate.

Have you watched any documentaries on NK? I would laugh if it werent for the imagery showing people crying their eyes out at the thought of him dying. NK is like Nazi Germany on steroids.

A lot of that seems pretty fake to me. I've read the novels by several defectors and while they are certainly a biased sample, their stories have been that large swaths of the country were really not big fans of KJI.

If I were a NK civilian and was out in public at the moment I'd make damn sure everyone saw me being upset.
