My wife has been wanting a kindle for a long time now since she reads a ton. So, I plan on buying her one for our anniversary next month and dont know if I should get her the fire or ipad. I know that the ipad would give her more overall use but I am not sure if she would use it for more than just reading. So ATOT, which one should I buy her?

If she wants a Fire, give her the Fire.

These two tablets are not in the same league but for reading I think the iPad 3 would be better because of the retina display.

If all she wants is a reading machine then get her a normal Kindle, not the fire. If you read a lot the difference between e-ink and LCD is night and day.

However, if she wants to do more than just read (email, browse the web, etc.) then get a tablet. iPad is kinda expensive and I don't really like the Fire (too thick for a 7" tab). There is the Nexus tablet, though I think it comes out in July.

I have had all 3 iPads now and love them. I did however buy a kindle touch last month, and must say i really like reading on that. I bought it mainly since i have Amazon Prime and can read a free book a month on it.

The iPad is nice or the fire with it being backlite for reading in bed.

Overall if i had to pick one i would say the iPad its one of my favorite pieces of tech.

Is the reason why I dont want to get her the plain kindle. She reads in bed all the time with a lamp on while I try to sleep and drives me nuts. So thats why I tought about the Fire/ipad.

My GF uses an iPad in bed. It's just as bright if not brighter and sometimes ends up being more annoying than a lamp because the light is bright white compared to a softer yellow. I showed her how to change reading to white text on black background and that really helped, but I know some people don't like how that looks.

My wife does not like reading on the bigger iPad. She has said that it is to hard to hold in one hand.

So a smaller 7" tablet might be the ticket. However, with the rumored $199 7" Google Nexus tablet coming out the Kindle Fire would not be a good value at the same price point.

I've had a Fire since launch and am happy with it.

The Fire works great for reading plain ebooks (text only) and the 7" size is easier to hold for long reading sessions.

I got Bejeweled 2 and Angry Birds free from Amazon and both played without any problems, so simple Popcap-style games will work well on either one.

If she gets music from Amazon the Kindle's cloud player works great. Sound quality through headphones is very good. If you have Amazon Prime you also get their library of free videos. Netflix streaming works well too, even when 30' away from my router.

The web browser is only OK -- pages render well, but the response to touches is not perfect. The iPad will be better for that.

By then the rumored Fire 2 might be out and/or the Fire 1 price may drop. Tech always gets better if you wait long enough

My wife has the Fire and loves it. Small enough to hold easily I think, plays games, has books, does Netflix/Amazon Prime streaming, can turn the brightness down at night, she really isn't aware of lag or such things. The browser, well it's the stock (Gingerbread?) Android browser so I certainly don't use it but she has played with it and it works fine. I already had a pile of the free "app of the day" deals on my Amazon account which is what it is signed into (the Amazon Prime account is mine also).

If it was just for reading I would wait to see if the were going to release an e-ink with integrated light model but otherwise I think the Fire would be fine. Even better if you can get it on one of their deals or officially refurbed.

First, there's the e-ink vs. LCD. Before you go too far studying things, I would see if she/you like reading books on an LCD because if you really prefer e-ink, then that narrows the discussion considerably. For e-ink vs. LCD, you can look at various readers at Barnes and Noble, or at Best Buy and try reading a page or two. Personally I don't care which one I use but I know a whole lot of people who only like e-ink (and a lot of them are here on MD&G). If you (she) really only like e-ink, then get a Kindle Touch, or a Nook SimpleTouch.

If LCD works well enough for reading, then there's the question of "do you want an e-reader, or do you want a tablet". For me, as person who travels a fair bit and likes to watch movies, and play games and surf the web, as well as read, I'm into tablets, but if you don't see yourself doing a lot of that stuff, then maybe you just want an e-reader. But if you do decide you want a tablet, then the next question is whether you want 10" or 7" - some people want lots of screen real-estate (me), but others like the lightweight 7" tablets because the larger ones get heavy when you hold them for a while. And then there's the question which eco-system you want to tie yourself to, Apple or Amazon (or a mix - Amazon has much better books, but you can get Kindle for the iPad and solve that problem). And lastly - but depending on your budget maybe it's even more important than the rest of this, there's there's whether you want to spend $400 on an iPad 2 (or $500 for a 3) or $200 for a Kindle Fire. Or $100 for one of the e-ink tablets.

I have always used Amazon for books, really have no interest in iBooks. It really comes down to the size it sounds like. I don't mind holding the Ipad and reading in bed, but she might prefer the size of the fire, tough call.

If its regular reading only. Regular Kindle. Not the Fire.

We have both at home. Fire and iPad. For what i use it for iPad is way better. But i do apps and games and surf etc. My wife mostly reads on teh Fire and i would have been better off getting a normal Kindle.

... for our anniversary ...
Stop.

Just get her the iPad.

"Oh look, my husband got me a Kindle for our anniversary." *her friends: yawn.*

"LooK! My husband got me an iPad...!" *her friends: swoon*

Anniversary gifts are not to be bargained for.

Came in here to post this. Rumor has it that Amazon has their own version of the Glowlight in the works. When they finally launch it, expect to see B&N trim the price of the Glowlight model to just under the Amazon model.

For reading books, there's no question. E-ink will trump any back lit display, doesn't matter whether its Retina, SAMOLED Plus HD, etc. The only thing thats more readable than e-ink is an actual book page.

My Glowlight Nook arrived Friday, and I can say that its awesome. Even reading in the dark with the light on, its incredibly easy on the eyes. Its light having a clip on LED light without the clip on and without any glare or reflection.

Edit - Now, if you want to read magazines or other publications with full color photos, etc. You're going to need a color device, preferably with a larger, high resolution screen. Which limits you to the iPad , Acer A700, or Asus Infinity Pad. But, the OP's wife stated the ~10in screen were too heavy to hold one handed . . . so, Nook Glowlight or Kindle Touch.

I have both an e-ink Kindle and the Fire. Yes, the e-ink text is sharper and the battery life is better, but reading on the Fire worked just as well for me.

If it's only going to be used for text, then a glowlight Kindle would be ideal if it existed. If you think she might like streaming music or video too then the Fire is better.

She is also really big on Netflix and with our Amazon Prime she gets even more. I am starting to lean towards the Fire. I say that because if I get her an iPad, I know that I will be trying to steal it at times and that wont end well.

Okay, but there's so many other things you can do on the iPad besides reading. I'd definitely pick the iPad. No brainer here unless cost is a serious issue.

Stop having premarital relations with your gf and this would be a non issue you impure heathen.
