I have been looking for a Kindle or a Nook my wife for Christmas.

I am looking to buy either B/W ones for around $139.

The only reason I have to go with the Nook is she uses the B&N card to get discounts.

You can get the Nook from Target (?) for $99 at Black Friday. I have the 2nd Generation Kindle and I love it. The 3rd gen is even better. I cannot comment on Nook but I love Amazon. I would get whichever you think has a better library.

You might check whether there are any discounts offered for Nook-books, they publishers might not allow any.

I have a 2nd generation Kindle too and am happy with it. I buy a fair amount from Amazon so their reader makes more sense for me.

I would go with the nook, seems to be more open and allows you a broader array of options.

I got my wife a kindle (but I'm the only one who has used it so far). It's really awesome. After finding some converting software I can convert any kind of document such as pdfs and epubs into the kindle format and it works great. I was originally very worried about software compatibility but that's not an issue.

Never used a nook, but the new color one looks cool. As for the kindle, the price is right, the battery life is insane, and it does what I want it to do. I also just plain like amazon more than B&N.

The nook has better compatibility with the formats used by libraries (epub + Adobe DRM).

So if I had eBooks on PDF already I could convert them and read them on the Kindle? Does the Nook do this too?

Only reason to go nook is if you will be getting stuff from your local library. My daughter has a 3rd gen kindle and it's amazing, and the selection of free books on amazon is nice.

I had a 1st gen Nook and wasn't pleased with the contrast of the screen.

Got a 3rd gen Kindle and it's been great. The e-ink Pearl screen they use now have very good contrast compared to the 1st gen Nook's screen.

Absolutely. Anyone who suggests anything else is a fool. The iPad beats both the kindle and the nook in every way imaginable. lol. Everyone knows this.

Except the Kindle is $139-$189, the Nook is $199-$250, and the iPad is $500-$800.

Kind of narrows the playing field a bit.

I've tried reading an ebook on the iPad for a couple of hours and my eyes were not happy after that.

This is a negative placebo. You've been conditioned to believe that 'screens' are bad and paper is good. Open your mind to the truth, and free yourself from the bonds of ignorance.

Get whichever has a touchscreen. I have a Sony and it's awesome being able to look up definitions by tapping words.

Certainly iPad screen isn't good for reading, especially if you go outside in sunny day. I love to read on beaches. iPad battery does last just for 10 hours, when nook battery will work for 30 days. You can go for vacation without electricity and still read books. Digital ink technology is cool, hopefully it will be colored soon.
