I have a nook, it's fine. My buddy has a kindle, he says it's fine. We tried each others readers out and there are pros/cons. I had BN gift cards ($100 worth actually) so the Nook was a far more attractive option for me. If I was paying full price I'd probably go with a kindle since I spend more at amazon.

Certainly iPad screen isn't good for reading, especially if you go outside in sunny day. I love to read on beaches. iPad battery does last just for 10 hours, when nook battery will work for 30 days. You can go for vacation without electricity and still read books. Digital ink technology is cool, hopefully it will be colored soon.

Nook battery won't last 30 days (unless that firmware update I haven't installed yet is really really impressive). But certainly longer than an iPad.

If its any help in decision making I got my mom the Kindle with 3G. I played with it a bit to make sure it works well. I think she will like it. The screen looks great. Its easy to find new books and download them. You can change many display options, even turn the thing sideways. Lasts a whole month if you dont use wifi or 3G. Plays music which means she can listen to Vivaldi while reading or use audio books instead. Functions as a basic web browser but it looks like meh. Very small and pocketable. The pics I saw didnt really do it justice. I need to get a case for it. Feels fragile.

I recommend it for anyone who loves to read on the go but thats all. If you need constant weather and news and videos and other stupid shit, you will need a tablet.

I just picked up a Kindle today. The apps on my laptop/BB are good, but I wanted the actual device.

I own a kindle and an ipad. I rarely ever use the kindle to read. In fact my wife uses it instead. Eye strain hasn't been an issue but I sit in front of a monitor all day long as it is.

Absolutely. Anyone who suggests anything else is a fool. The iPad beats both the kindle and the nook in every way imaginable. lol. Everyone knows this.

No way, it doesn't beat them in price, and it certainly is not as easy on the eyes when reading books. It's great for lots of stuff, but it can't measure up to the kindle or nook for reading purposes.

I guess it depends on your reading. I read both novels, non-fiction, and comics. On the kindle, you can't do comics.

Additionally, I believe the whole eye strain is bogus unless you just aren't used to reading on LCDs.

HOWEVER, what isn't overblown is reading in sunlight. On the ipad, don't even try, on e-ink it is wonderful.

I just picked up one of the new Kindles and I love it. The massive collection of free classics is absolutely amazing (just finished reading White Fang by Jack London) and the fact that I can find most books that I want is another great plus. The e-ink is nice to read, especially after looking at a computer monitor all day and in the sun it's especially nice to read. I'm also the type of person who will read books over and over again and take new lessons from it every time I read.

The only problem I see is that I can't get any of the Aubrey/Maturin series by O'Brian or any of the Hornblower series by Forrester. Grrr.

After finding some converting software I can convert any kind of document such as pdfs and epubs into the kindle format and it works great. I was originally very worried about software compatibility but that's not an issue.

Link to said software?

nook, open source, easily hackable
more formats supported
16hr battery life (don't know what the kindle life is)
e-ink is easy on the eyes

i see no need for a keyboard, as we just use it to read downloaded books

and LOL @ ipad suggestion

I have a nook and really like it. Honestly, I think both devices are pretty equivalent, but I like the B&N stores in the area that do free samples for nook users if you're on their wifi.

Also, the little touchscreen at the bottom is fun (works really well with the sudoku ap).

I use this: http://calibre-ebook.com/ to manage my non-B&N e-books. It does metadata, covers, format conversion, etc. etc. Pretty slick.

My understanding is that the Nook uses the same E-ink display as the Kindle 2. Of course now the Kindle 3 is out. One of my friends has the new Kindle 3 and it is really nice, somewhate better than what I recollect the Kindle 1 was like. But I still want the functionality of the Nook in a Kindle. I'm going to try and hold out to see what the next Nook is like but I really need to order one of them soon as I am feeling that I have pretty much exhausted my public libraries.

What the hell are you guys reading on these n00ks and k1ndles.

I've read 30 books total my entire life. Half of them were math books.

The rest of my english education came off the internet. :sneaky:

Correct. At the retail prices of $139/189 for Kindle vs. $149/199 for Nook, of course you should go with the Kindle 3g But if you can get a Nook for $100 or less (lots of recent deals - as low as $86 for Nook 3g like-new refurb), then the Nook would be a worthy consideration. Why pay more for inferior hardware? Go with the Kindle 3g - it's significantly smaller, lighter, and has a much nicer screen.

This is a negative placebo. You've been conditioned to believe that 'screens' are bad and paper is good. Open your mind to the truth, and free yourself from the bonds of ignorance.

In broad daylight, there's no way that the ipad is better than the nook or kindle.

I am also pondering weather to buy a kindle or nook. they both about 150ish. I like the kindle for long battery life, and the nook for the expansion slot and you can jail break it to full Andriod functionality. I wish they can drop the color touch screen on nook so the battery life can be better. still thinking.

I've used both. I like the Kindle better, especially the new Kindle - the new E-ink screen is awesome, especially framed by the dark gray plastic. The Nook is neat, but the GUI is slow (supposed to be getting better with every firmware update). I like the concept of having a color touchscreen for navigation and whatnot, but in practice, it was laggy and even the page turns on the Nook were pretty dismal compared to the Kindle.

The Kindle is just a nice, simple, "it just works" e-reader. I'm a fan

It's really not. I've used both. The iPad is great for web content and quick-read stuff like magazines, but I hate it for reading books on. Staring at a backlit screen for long periods of time (when focusing on reading a book) is very fatiguing. I can use my computer monitor all day long just fine, but that's because I flip my eyes around and don't sit and read ebooks all day long on it. I have found a more recent use for ebooks on it though - reference books, like my school textbooks, are actually pretty nice on it because I typically don't "read" through stuff like my math textbooks, but rather focus on a paragraph or two and then tear it apart on paper to analyze what its trying to teach me.

For a novel or other long reading material like that, you can't beat E-ink. I really wish someone would come out with a good e-reader that had a Pixel Qi screen:

Although, for the record, I do think it's moronically stupid that e-readers do not have backlights (something like a Timex watch glow would be fine!) or at least some kind of reading light (nano LEDs on the inside border please!). They make the most advanced electronic books in the world, but don't bother putting in a feature to read in the dark in your bed or on an airplane. Come on.
